Most residents don't know what their city is doing to help keep them safe from heat, floods and other extreme weather events. Athens' story map communicates extreme heat risks to residents and also shows how green, car-free streets are helping cool the city down. To create a relatable story, the city's climate stories centers on Sofie and her grandchildren to represent two vulnerable groups: older people and young children. REACHOUT city hubs are using climate stories to communicate risks, gather insights from the population and reach communities vulnerable to heat, flooding and other threats. Athens continues to update and add to its climate story map to include new insights and information about the city's action on extreme heat. Throughout the month, we will be showcasing how #CitiesClimateStories are helping cities advance in their climate resilience journey. In today’s reality, urban practitioners need to understand the risk and opportunities associated with climate change, prioritize adaptation measures and develop effective adaptation strategies for cities to thrive. The Triple-A Toolkit, developed to support urban resilience and climate adaptation across Europe, equips practitioners with tools to assess climate risks, raise resilience ambitions and take action. To ensure the toolkit’s effectiveness, it’s crucial to maintain consistent use over time. This report highlights essential strategies designed to support the long-term and continued use of the tools over time. Farmers lost significant earnings linked to extreme weather between 2018 and 2022, but the impacts varied widely among small and large farms, as well as those that could afford climate adaptation measures. Our colleagues' latest paper dives into climate vulnerabilities in farming, focusing on how extreme weather events impact the important agriculture sector in the Netherlands. The study, by Anoek van Tilburg Thijs Endendijk and Hans de Moel at IVM Institute for Environmental Studies and Deltares, sheds light on the urgent need to address inequalities among farms in the face of climate change. In 2022 alone, climate-related disasters caused over €50 billion of economic damage in Europe. The real estate sector in particular is heavily exposed to physical climate risks, and climate services can help the industry assess its risks and take effective action. On November 4, real estate professionals and reserrchers will gather in Paris to open the "black box" of climate risk assessments for real estate and uncover solutions for the sector and society at large. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dM_zJHqm Observatoire de l'immobilier durable AEW Climate Adaptation Services (CAS)

Three months' worth of rainfall hit Central Europe in three days, causing catastrophic and deadly flooding. Yet, did the region narrowly avoid even more devastating damage? A bright spot compared to past floods is that improved #forecasting, #earlywarningsystems, and #floodprotections saved lives. Nature-based solutions also played a crucial role in reducing the impacts. In Wołów, Poland, restoring the natural flow of the Odra river redirected floodwaters to floodplains, protecting nearby villages from disaster. We stand in solidarity with those affected by last month’s floods. These moments remind us of the urgent need for life-saving action to protect our climate, our homes, and our future. Innovative tools 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥 when they don't meet the needs of users. To adopt climate services tools in the urban context, tools must respond to a need, be easy to use and deliver fresh insights. The City of Cork has been co-developing climate services tools to get the most out of innovation, ensuring residents and policy makers can employ them to confront climate risks from flooding and extreme heat. In their recent publication, Denise McCullagh, Ad Jeuken and Dr. Gaby S. Langendijk reflect on the experience of Cork in piloting innovative climate tools. Climate stories in action are helping schoolchildren in Logroño connect what they learn in science classes back to daily life. Elena Garrido Martínez shares her experience as a liaison with the City of Logroño supporting the development of tools to help the city prepare for extreme heat and flood risks. "It was satisfying to see how everyone was interested, especially the youngest ones, in getting to know the characters in the story, in seeing the effects of heat on people or how it affects the city in general," she says of recent public activities featuring the city's climate story.
