💤 The relationship between sleep and dementia goes both ways. Changes in sleep are often due to dementia-related brain changes, and sleep disruptions often make the symptoms of dementia worse. Maintaining a regular routine, especially with sleep, is crucial for people with dementia and their caregivers. Sleep disruptions worsen dementia symptoms (cognitive, physical, and behavioral) and often increase caregiver burden. Dr. Armen Moughamian, MD PhD explores the causes of sleep disruptions and how to address them in this popular article on Learn → https://lnkd.in/gJ9Mdywz #dementia #dementiacare #dementiadiagnosis #dementiacaregiver #dementiaawareness #caregiversupport #sleep

Let’s talk about vascular dementia. Unlike other dementias (for example, Alzheimer’s), vascular dementia is much less predictable. Progression greatly depends on someone’s underlying risk factors, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and smoking. If not addressed over time, these underlying health conditions can cause more severe memory changes. The good news → when people do treat these risk factors, they can slow down or stop the progression of vascular dementia. Last year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (#CMS) launched a new program: Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (#GUIDE). The U.S. government is making new benefits available for people on Medicare living with dementia. These benefits extend to their family caregivers as well, and cover all parts of the dementia journey. The goal of this program is to improve quality of life, reduce caregiver burden, and help people with dementia age in their homes and communities for as long as possible. GUIDE will be life-changing for families managing dementia. 👉 Learn more about GUIDE, who's eligible, and how to access services here: https://lnkd.in/gFeJvP3A And if you have any questions about the GUIDE program and what this means for you, please reach out to our team!

Having the right interdisciplinary care team in place is one important step in building your support system. Who is on the team will vary — it’s often based on the type of dementia and the current prognosis. As the disease progresses and new challenges arise, the care team may need to adjust and bring in new specialists to address evolving needs.
