About us

Tackling climate change is a serious business. Our farm-scale 100 tonne CO₂/year biochar pilot project in Cornwall is launching in July 2024, and we’ve decided to document our journey through a podcast. Join us as we share our story, from conception to implementation, and together, let's make a difference to our climate and the way we farm. 3 MtCO₂ by 2050 in the UK. This is the *combined* biochar and enhanced weathering carbon removal capacity, modelled into the UK Climate Change Committee's (CCC) Seventh Carbon Budget. That's just 8.4% of the total budget (total is c.36 MtCO₂). Here's a breakdown: - BECCS capacity is expected to be 25 MtCO₂ - DACCS capacity is expected to be 8 MtCO₂ - Biochar and enhanced weathering is 3 MtCO₂ If you are pro biochar, on first glance, you might find that number to be disappointing. On the contrary, it's brilliant to see biochar featured given it wasn't even modelled in *any* scenarios in the previous report in 2020. As awareness for biochar grows, more field trials are conducted and new projects get setup, I wouldn't be surprised if biochar takes a significantly larger share of that 36 MtCO₂ number in future budgets. Particularly given biochar can work with existing land practices as opposed to competing for land. What do other UK biochar people think? Has your LinkedIn feed been filled with our biochar content recently? In September last year, we had the pleasure of welcoming - Marketing Coordinator, Oluwaseun Sanni to Restord as employee no.1. Thanks to Entrepreneurial Futures SPF Project funding. Since he joined, we have smashed our KPI's: - More than *doubled* our social media following - Reached *c.200,000* impressions across our posts - Set up on platforms like TikTok and Instagram - Helped us reach *10,000+ episode downloads* of our podcast, Grounded - Become a professional skid steer driver 😂 The programme has wrapped up and sadly, Oluwaseun's employment with us has come to an end (we'll still be doing some ad-hoc work together). If anyone in the carbon removal or climate space is looking for a proactive, fast-learner in the marketing/comms space, please do get in touch with him. He's also just graduated with, distinction, MSc digital and social media marketing at University of Plymouth 🎓 Thanks for all your support Oluwaseun and for getting your 'boots dirty' with us on the farm.

  • Last week, we asked you a question - how much CO2 will these bags of biochar lock away? We were overwhelmed with the responses! However, the correct answer was, drum roll 🥁… 4.14 tonnes of CO2e Congratulations Taylor Kazlauskas with an incredibly accurate guess of 4.24! We will be in touch to discuss your biochar prize 🎁 We had a really wide range of guesses and some pretty detailed answers so to satiate your data crunching desires, we’ve laid out how we get to that number below ⬇️ Got your calculators ready? First we need to start with a C to CO2 conversion. When carbon converts into carbon dioxide, the mass increases because oxygen atoms combine with the carbon atoms. 1 tonne of carbon therefore equates to 3.67 tonnes of CO2. Now onto the biochar. Each full bag in the video contains c.90kg (dry weight) biochar. 20 x 90 = 1,800kg or 1.8 tonnes We then multiply total biochar weight by 3.67 (C to CO2 conversion). 1.8 x 3.67 = 6.61 6.61 tonnes of CO2 then? Not quite… Biochar isn’t 100% carbon and we need to account for this. Our lab results have shown our biochar is c.85% carbon. 6.61 x 0.85 = 5.62 We then account for how much of that biochar will stay locked in the ground over time. Standards vary but we’re working off of a conservative estimate that 80% will still be here hundreds of years from now. 5.62 x 0.80 = 4.50 If you’ve made it this far… congratulations, really…! Last but not least, we factor in the carbon burden which represents the emissions produced in the process of removing this amount of carbon i.e. transportation, processing and a % of total embodied emissions of the project. The carbon burden in similar projects works out to be c. 180kgCO2e per tonne of biochar made. 2 x 0.18 = 0.36 1.8 x 3.67 x 0.85 x 0.8 - 0.36 = 4.14 Got questions or feedback? Let us know in the comments 🤙

  • What is carbon removal? There are so many in-depth explanations of carbon removal, each offering unique insights into its importance. But we wanted to simplify the concept into this 25 seconds of easy to understand video. Here is a quick breakdown of carbon removal, how it works and some common examples. #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #GoodGrowth #Sustainability #NetZero - - - Restord is a UK-based biochar startup turning waste wood into a climate solution. *UPDATE: Winner has been announced. See our recent post to find out!* How much CO2 will these bags of biochar lock away? Each bag represents a small step in carbon removal, transforming biomass waste into a stable form of carbon. So, take a guess - how much CO2 do you think these bags will capture? Drop your answer in the comments! Shoutout to Sebastian Manhart for inspiring this The closest guess will receive a bag of biochar! We’ll publish the answer next week…

It’s always a pleasure to welcome visitors on site. Last week, we welcomed a filming crew and a team from the University of Plymouth for the Entrepreneurial Futures SPF Project film. The aim is to capture our journey as a biochar startup working at the intersection of carbon removal and agriculture. Tom Previte shared how our pilot project is demonstrating biochar’s potential to transform biomass waste into a long-term climate solution - sequestering CO₂ while improving soil health. He also reflected on the progress we have made so far, all of which is captured in the short film. Oluwaseun Sanni shared insights from his Net Zero Leadership programme and how his time at Restord has shaped his experience. Claire Pearce, representing the University of Plymouth, highlighted the impact of business-academic collaborations and how partnerships like these drive innovation in sustainability. Many thanks to Susan Langford and Carmel Lawless for their roles in making this a success. This film will feature as part of the Entrepreneurial Futures SPF Project for Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Good Growth Fund. We can’t wait to share the final cut with you! - - - Restord is a UK-based biochar startup turning waste wood into a climate solution. Visit our website to learn more. • A huge thank you to Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Partnership for their support over the past six months and for capturing our work so well in this video. Biochar is a simple yet powerful tool for removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, and we’re proud to be producing it right here in Cornwall. This explainer video breaks down how we’re turning waste wood into a climate solution. We’re gearing up for an even bigger 2025. Stay tuned! Watch the video to learn more about biochar and what we’re building at Restord. - - - Restord is a UK-based biochar startup turning waste wood into a climate solution. • Did you know that education is the single strongest predictor of climate change awareness globally? According to a 2024 World Bank report, an additional year of education can increase climate awareness by 8.6% and directly improve pro-climate behaviours. Yet, education remains one of the most underfunded areas in climate financing, receiving just 1.5% of global climate funds. We believe education empowers action - not just for tomorrow, but today. By integrating climate topics into foundational learning, schools can catalyse the large-scale behaviour change needed to tackle the climate crisis. At Restord, we’re doing our part by educating and engaging through our podcast, Grounded. By sharing our journey as a biochar startup, we unpack the complexities of carbon removal and make information on this solution accessible to everyone. This work aims to inspire curiosity, spark innovation, and highlight the vital role biochar can play in combating climate change. This International Day of Education, let’s advocate for education systems that drive climate awareness, resilience and innovation. #InternationalDayOfEducation #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Biochar #CarbonRemoval
