We were named in April, but today, on the two year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act being signed into law as the biggest climate investment in history, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially awarded our Power Forward Communities coalition a $2 billion National Clean Investment Fund grant alongside our coalition members Habitat for Humanity International, Enterprise Community Partners, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and United Way. As part of this coalition working on single-family homes and apartments, especially in low-income and disadvantaged communities, Rewiring America will be announcing local community partnerships in the coming months. We're excited to have these resources to help shape the market, draw in private investment to this work, and for families, help make going electric easier! Read the press release here:

About us
Rewiring America is a growing nonprofit focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. Our world-class team develops accessible, actionable data and tools. We’re the conduit for Americans to achieve energy efficiency, tackle nationwide emission goals, improve health, save money and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce. We believe in an abundant, flourishing, climate-safe future, and know that, together, we can realize one. Founded in the summer of 2020, Rewiring America’s purpose is to make electrification simple, measurable, and inevitable. Every single opportunity to replace a car, water heater, furnace, dryer, cooktop, and even lawn equipment that runs on fossil fuels is an opportunity for electrification. We are committed to using the best data and analysis to build market-transforming partnerships and tell the stories of transformation and success that people will relate to, gravitate to, and want to join. We are outcomes-oriented, focused on achieving national emissions goals, improving our health, lowering monthly bills and creating millions of clean energy jobs. We know this is the decade that matters, and that our collective success winds through and depends on all of us.

It's really hard to know what your best levers are when it comes to personal efforts to bring down emissions (not that it's on you! systems, systems, systems, too). I'm excited to unpack our latest research on making electrification easier (in partnership with The Behavioural Insights Team, Heatmap News, and others!), and hear some of Rare's latest insights as well. Join me on October 16th for a conversation with Rare's Kevin Green. We'll discuss how behavioral science insights can simplify flipping the switch to clean energy. A teaser: When it dies, electrify! Reduce, reuse, rewire! Register here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ggDeQ6JG

“As a primary care doctor, especially when we had kids, we realized there is this invisible stuff in your home that is not healthy.” That’s Dr. Gaurab Basu. He’s a primary care physician, Rewiring America expert advisor, climate health advocate, and a dad. That “invisible stuff” he’s talking about are the toxic chemicals emitted by appliances that run on gas, like stoves. The kind of toxic chemicals, according to a recent study by Stanford University, that can cause childhood asthma and other respiratory conditions. For Dr. Basu, gas in the home is a no-go. That’s why his family’s cozy Boston home is fully loaded with an induction range, EV charging dock, solar panels, heat pump, and heat pump water heater — appliances that run on electricity. Watch Dr. Basu’s This Electric House tour (with special guest Leah Stokes!) to see how these appliances make his family’s lives better: https://lnkd.in/gxQ9Gb3m

“The people that live in the oldest and most unhealthy homes are often low-income, Black and brown communities, rural, tribal, and those are the people that can benefit from these [electrification] resources.” Our very own senior director of implementation learning and integration Jamal J. Lewis is leading a conversation at the New York Times’s Climate Forward Changemaker Lunch. Hear more about his work to make electrification equitable: https://lnkd.in/gvV79HKQ

“Across the country, fall is synonymous with the new school year: sharpened pencils, new bento-style lunch boxes and, for many, the return of the iconic yellow school bus. Only this year, millions of students will be transported by yellow school buses that are electric.” We’re excited to team up with Reasons to be Cheerful to tell stories about all the good that sustainable, electric machines are doing for communities across the country. Rewiring America took it up a notch at #ClimateWeekNYC 2024 with three events in the span of 48 hours: First, a sold-out public conversation between Stacey Abrams and Ayana Elizabeth Johnson in partnership with Grist, Mother Jones and the Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School. It was incredible to work and learn alongside our planning committee to bring this conversation to life. (Keep an eye out for the recording soon!) Second, an evening reception with remarks and calls to action (+ outrageously gorgeous graphics) from climate leaders and legends from across the ecosystem, including Abbie Dillen, Tonya Hicks, Stacey Abrams, Ashley Anderson, Secretary Jennifer Granholm and our co-founders Ari Matusiak and Alex Laskey. And finally, the Big Switches for an Electrified Life, our partner event with Heatmap News and The Behavioural Insights Team where we talked climate comms, capping gas pipes, and the little big switches you can take to #electrify your life. We kicked things off with a panel featuring industry leaders including Sarah Lazarovic, Michael Hallsworth, Leah Stokes, Saul Griffith, and Sheena Mirpuri and Robinson Meyer—then transformed the room, bringing these switches to life. Thanks to Chef JJ Johnson for his induction demo, the Bike Powered Events team for bringing electric bikes to life (literally!), artist Allison Green for her renter-focused art installation, and our very own Mr. Heat Pump for just being himself! And of course, we ended things with a big, brassy, fun loving finish thanks to the Undertow Brass Band — it’s a Rewiring America event, after all. Thanks to the entire team at Rewiring America for supporting and consulting on these events, and SO many incredible vendors, external partners and pals -- too many to name. (But keep your eyes peeled for future posts! 😉) And finally, a very special thanks to my copilot Caitlin Spinweber for diving headfirst into these events alongside me this summer.
