Here are a few thoughts on TNW and Maki.vc's article "3 ESG myths VCs and startups need to snap out of (quickly)." Myth 1: ESG Equals Impact Investing - While 'impact investing' may remain a distinct asset class with distinct objectives, ALL companies have ESG risks and opportunities to manage. What's more? If you can connect your company's environmental and social outcomes to a market opportunity - such as the emissions associated with a specific industry and how your offering is able to address it - your 'impact narrative and numbers' WILL become your competitive advantage. Myth 2: ESG is not Relevant for Seed and Early-Stage Start-Ups - Investors face their own set of ESG mandates, expectations, and reporting requirements. So do B2B Buyers. ESG is the new normal for B2B Procurement and the easier you can make it for them to understand your potential role (and value) in addressing their own ESG commitments and expectations, the easier for you to win game-changing (and perhaps life-changing) deals. Myth 3: ESG is a "Nice to Have" Company Aspect - In addition to BlackRock's Larry Fink's opinion on ESG being a neccessity for capitalism (forget environmentalism), any company not addressing these elements will 'feel the pain' in their capital-raising and customer acquisition efforts. Although ESG may not be a lead priority for your direct contact, there's a high probability their bosses' boss is losing sleep over it. Help them go from 'ESG zero' to 'ESG hero' - And WIN the deal.
