Funding supplied by voter-approved green bonds is a catalyst that gives DEM the capability to manage, protect, and restore Rhode Island’s natural resources. If approved by voters in November 🗳 ✔ the Green Bond (Question 4) will help Rhode Island become a more equitable state that will be better prepared to meet the challenges of climate change and help strengthen our communities through improved recreation, job creation, economic growth, and expanding the local food system. We protect, restore, and promote our environment to ensure RI remains a wonderful place to live, visit + raise a family.
About us
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) serves as the chief steward of the state’s natural resources – from beautiful Narragansett Bay to our local waters and green spaces to the air we breathe. Our mission put simply is to protect, restore, and promote our environment to ensure Rhode Island remains a wonderful place to live, visit, and raise a family. We protect these precious resources through development and enforcement of environmental laws, and we strive to provide guidance to our many customers in complying with these laws. We work with our partners to restore our lands and waters, to conserve wildlife and marine resources, and to monitor environmental quality so we can build healthy, more resilient communities. We promote our natural resources – from our historic parks and beaches to our farms and delicious local food and seafood. We are focused on helping our state grow “green” and build desirable neighborhoods that offer ample space to recreate and connect with nature.

As summer comes to an end, we want to give a big shout-out to DEM’s fantastic summer staff for their hard work maintaining Rhode Island's state parks, beaches, and campgrounds🌊 🏕️ 🌞 ! We appreciate our talented seasonal workforce who make it possible for millions of people to enjoy Rhode Island's natural beauty each year. Our dedicated lifeguards, park rangers, facilities attendants, beach managers, groundskeepers, laborers, and park naturalists all play a vital role in providing a safe and fun experience while safeguarding our precious natural resources. A reminder that during the off-season RI State Beach parking lots are open and parking is free. Portajohns are available at most locations, weather permitting. As lifeguards will not be on duty, swimmers are responsible for their own safety. DEM strongly encourages everyone to learn to swim, respect the water, and understand their swimming limitations. #RIStateParks #ExploreRI #TeamDEM #RIBeaches #StaffAppreciation

That’s a wrap! DEM’s 2023-2024 Wastewater Leadership Boot Camp ended with a final class at DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Outdoor Education Office! This year-long professional development training program for wastewater operators introduces participants to new technologies and industry experts through classroom training and front-line field tours, providing expert training and networking opportunities to the next generation of wastewater treatment plant leadership across Rhode Island. DEM salutes the hundreds of wastewater professionals who run and maintain the state’s 19 wastewater treatment systems around the clock — a job that is largely unseen and underappreciated. This work is vital to protecting our waterways, way of life, and the health of our families and economy. #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalProtection #TeamDEM #WatersWorthIt
