Roper Hospital is the first in Charleston to be recognized by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) as a Center of Excellence in Surgical Safety for Smoke Evacuation. This award recognizes our dedication to keeping patients and teammates safe by ensuring that operating room air is clean and free of surgical smoke—a byproduct of procedures using lasers or electrosurgical units. Additionally, the Go Clear Award honors our surgical teams for successfully adopting technology to eliminate surgical smoke. As Summerville Mayor Russ Touchberry noted at our recent ‘topping off’ ceremony, the new medical complex will provide much-needed care closer to home for those who currently travel long distances for medical services, including healthcare professionals who commute for work.
