🎉 Celebrating Juneteenth: A Historic Day of Freedom 🎉 At SPY, our mission is to create inclusive spaces and support marginalized communities. Juneteenth is an important reminder of the ongoing fight for racial equality, a cause we are deeply committed to. *In LA County, African Americans represent 7.9% of the population. Black people make up 34% of the 66.000+ in the latest homeless count. Let’s honor this important day by celebrating freedom and continuing the fight for equality. Happy Juneteenth! ✊🏽 #spy #safeplaceforyouth #endyouthhomelessness #venice #Juneteenth #June2024 *nshlacounty.gov

About us
Safe Place for Youth was founded in 2011 by a group of dedicated volunteers and Founder/Executive Director Alison Hurst, offering hot food, clothing, and socks to homeless youth in Venice Beach from their cars. Since those humble beginnings, we've been driven to give youth opportunities to transform by multiplying our services, building our programming, and strengthening our partnerships. With incredible support from Board Members, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations, SPY has grown from a 100% volunteer-led organization to a professional staff of approximately 60 employees, whose skill sets have strengthened our programs. In April 2015, we moved into our own building in Venice, giving us the opportunity to expand programs, address youth needs, and partner with local specialty service providers. The timing of our expansion is significant. In Los Angeles, there is a real urgency in addressing the issues of homelessness and SPY stays centrally involved in the discussions impacting policy change. The reality is that the numbers of homeless youth have increased to epidemic proportions, which means we must respond to the crisis by continuing to grow our programs and maintaining our leadership role with coalition groups working to end youth homelessness. Our mission is to empower young people experiencing homelessness to thrive by providing lasting, community-driven solutions that address racial and social inequity. Federal Tax ID: 84-1802637

💫 Yesterday was an inspiring day at Safe Place for Youth - we gathered for Celebrating Samba, an interactive dance performance that introduces audiences of all ages to the fundamentals of Afro-Brazilian culture, addresses the African Diaspora, and creates community for African Americans and other members of the community to celebrate their cultural impact 💫 The event, held at the SPY Access Center in Venice, which had 60 members check in and be able to experience this magical journey. Our friends In-N-Out Burger brought their famous food truck, donating food, while Handel's Homemade Ice Cream Cream donated ice cream! Salt & Straw donated gift cards for our raffle, and we had a festive summer-themed photo booth for all to enjoy 💙 #safeplaceforyouth #spy #endyouthhomelessness #celebratingsamba
