The area under Interstate 35 near Houston Street got a little bit brighter thanks to a group of more than 30 committed National Art Honor Society students from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy. They were chosen to participate in the Youth Revival Paint Jam Oct. 19 in partnership with City Problem Solvers which aimed to add value to the neighborhood by painting vibrant murals on the expressway support columns underneath I-35. The students learned about patience and collaboration as they created lasting art on the 18-foot pillars. Learn also about the insights he brings back to SAISD when he travels to opportunities such as The Holdsworth Center’s Superintendent Leadership Program, which was designed to help new superintendents meet State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requirements, the grant-funded and required trips are part of a Wallace Foundation grant, and conferences that include collaboration with other inner city superintendents. The new competition gym at Tafolla Middle School is coming along, with the piers recently poured. The construction crew also is preparing to paint the existing gym, along with HVAC-related work that is underway. #Bond2020 construction at the campus is projected to be completed in March 2026. For Maricela Alarcon, Ed.D., coming to CAST Med and CAST Imagine this year was really a homecoming.    The south side native and graduate of Brackenridge High School has a 10-minute commute down Military Drive from her home to the schools’ shared site, which is another 10 minutes from where she grew up in the Lone Star area, allowing her to attend Briscoe Elementary and Harris Middle Schools.    “I’m a Southsider,” Alarcón said. “The reason I got my doctorate and the reason I serve as principal on the south side is that I want my students to know that no matter where you come from and who you are, you can accomplish anything in life as long as you have ganas — the will, the grit, the determination.” (CLICK BELOW TO READ MORE) #saisd #saisdproud #saisdalumni #saisdfamiia #principal #educator #schools #schoolleaders
