In partnership with the City of Seattle, we constructed four urban biofiltration swales bordering two properties to treat street runoff before reaching Lake Union. These swales filter contaminants from the water, equivalent to the top three feet of Lake Union each year, contributing to a healthier environment for our Seattle community and beyond. As we have expanded our programming this year, one rewarding highlight has been meeting with more Japanese companies as they first touch ground in Oregon, and connecting them to a variety of public and private partners. On Monday this included fascinating discussions with Yvonne S. at Prosper Portland and the team of brewers at Hopworks Brewery, advocates at SALMON-SAFE, and the team overseeing sustainable sushi certification at Bamboo Sushi. The group visited over 20 locations in total over their two days with us.

The team was recently on site at KCMT's Interim Base for the delivery of the steel gantry trusses! These trusses, some up to 100ft long, will support bus charging on elevated platforms, using eco-friendly steel that meets SALMON-SAFE standards to protect the river ecosystem. Our Homestead homeowners at The Southard joined Site Story, SALMON-SAFE and Tilth Alliance to finish assembling the grattix boxes and oyster shell barrels at the development! These green features will remove pollutants from roof runoff—keeping the water flowing from our downspouts clear. This ensures the stormwater that travels from our Southard homes to the Puget Sound is healthy and clean for native salmon populations. Thus, certifying the ‘The Southard’ development as Salmon-Safe!  Our highly energy efficient, green-built Southard homes will provide 11 permanently affordable homeownership opportunities to income-qualified households. West Main has achieved LEED Gold certification with the following outstanding sustainability statistics: - Landscape improvements and efficient irrigation save more than 332k gallons of water per year, 50% better than a typical building - Low-flow fixtures save approximately 2.06m gallons of water per year, 30% better than typical buildings - IAQ measures include MERV-13 filters for all occupied spaces and ventilation that exceeds code minimum by 30% - 84% of all waste generated during demolition and construction was recycled - 17% of the value of construction materials (~$37.7m) have sustainable attributes, such as recycled/FSC content or recycling take-back programs - 36 different products were installed that disclose environmental impacts with an Environmental Product Declaration - 23 different products were installed that disclose material ingredients with a Health Product Declaration - The project is SALMON-SAFE certified We’re excited to continue collaborating with project partners to advance sustainability in the built environment through innovative development and design. September 21st is National Cleanup Day, the largest single-day cleanup event in the United States. Instilling a culture of responsibility and care for outdoor environments, National Cleanup Day works towards a future where nature's beauty remains for everyone’s enjoyment. We’ve demonstrated a steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility with 40 LEED-certified buildings and a $55 million investment in soil remediation throughout the Puget Sound region. As we began investing in the South Lake Union neighborhood—recognizing the importance of Lake Union's ecosystem—we initiated a partnership with Salmon-Safe, pioneering ultra-urban development site certification, and a developer accreditation program that helped mainstream Salmon-Safe practices across our development portfolio. Interdisciplinary teams, including PhD-level scientists representing the expertise behind the certification standards, assess every project in person on behalf of Salmon-Safe, furthering their efforts to take a bioregional and site-specific approach.
