“Every single day we are bringing world-class care to a very rural population that’s otherwise geographically isolated in one of the poorest areas of the state. I feel that the women here are so inspirational and so diverse, and I think if there’s anything worth fighting for, it’s them.” CNN aired a feature story today about how Dr. Johnna Nynas, OB-GYN at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, is making maternal health care more accessible for women in rural areas through innovative approaches. In 2021, Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota was awarded $3.67 million to create a rural care network. With that grant money, Dr. Nynas and her colleagues assembled a team to help set up appointments, provide patient transportation and facilitate check-ins on patients’ home lives to assess what they needed outside of medical care. They also outfitted a network of doctors’ offices that don’t have an OB-GYN with Wi-Fi and telemedicine equipment. They then expanded to getting patients their own equipment including a blood-pressure cuff and fetal heart rate monitor so they could take appointments from home – including patients with high-risk pregnancies like Ashley Jacobson from Bigfork, Minnesota – who was also featured in the story. “That is delivering the care to women,” Dr. Nynas said, “instead of expecting women to come to us for the care.” Watch the full story here: https://cnn.it/3V21StP
