The State of Michigan has awarded a nearly $200,000 project to a team from the University of Michigan’s Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering department to develop a maritime strategy. This year-long initiative, funded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, is part of Michigan’s efforts to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2050 under the MI Healthy Climate Plan. The project focuses on decarbonizing the maritime industry, which accounts for 3% of U.S. transportation carbon emissions. Project leader Thomas McKenney stated the project’s objective is to ensure environmental sustainability while maintaining economic viability, aiming to prevent job losses during the transition to cleaner practices. "By offering businesses an opportunity to compost, we ensure that the resources they are using — and paying to dispose of — are put back into a healthier and more sustainable food system." – Ricky Blanding, co-founder, Scrap Soils #ScrapsSoils is a Detroit-based nonprofit composting organization, focused on diverting food waste from landfills and transforming it into nutrient-rich compost. In 2023, Scraps Soils piloted a robot program in the Transportation Innovation Zone with support from the Office of Mobility Innovation at The City of Detroit. Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) investment and use has had an impact on energy consumption and carbon emissions. AI applications can use up to 33x more energy than traditional software, with data centers already contributing 1-1.5% of global electricity consumption and approximately 1% of energy-related CO₂ emissions. Tech companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Google are facing increased emissions due to their AI investments. Additionally, data centers require vast amounts of water for cooling, intensifying resource competition in drought-prone areas. Although awareness of these environmental challenges is growing among tech companies, a recent survey revealed that many IT managers lack the necessary skills to address AI’s sustainability impacts. Established by Michigan State University (MSU) in 2017, the DPFLI is MSU’s first urban agriculture research center. It has transformed a neglected 3.3-acre site into an urban farm featuring over 220 plant species, including fruit and nut trees, along with community spaces for educational programming. Led by Edwards and supported by staff member Stathis Pauls, the DPFLI has created facilities for community activities, including a storage shed, hoop house, and a communal pizza oven that enhances the local food experience. With an open-gate policy, the center operates on the principle of community access, allowing residents to freely harvest from the edible landscape. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which has supported community development initiatives such as economic projects, housing rehabilitation, and the enhancement of community centers. Macomb County Government has been a participant since the program’s inception, receiving approximately $1.8 million annually over the past five years. These grants are targeted to communities with populations under 50,000, allowing for improvements in local amenities like parks, sidewalks, and street lighting. Recent projects in Macomb County funded by the CDBG program include the renovation of Roxana Park in Eastpointe (pictured), upgrades to the Macomb Township Senior Center, and a solar street lighting initiative. Looking ahead, the county plans to pursue additional projects, including street repaving, sidewalk improvements, and more solar street lighting installations, pending continued funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
