In the 1980s, Nancy Erendyda Aguilera's family immigrated to the U.S. from El Salvador. Inspired by her family background, she's now researching the global decline in democracy and how to combat it as a Ph.D candidate at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. During her time in academia, Aguilera has also had to overcome many challenges as a single mother and living with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease of the retina.
