A few years ago, I used to get one call per week from someone looking to invest in making carbon credits from kelp forests. But wild kelp forests are probably the hardest ecosystem to quantify carbon sequestration to the level of scientific accuracy needed for a credible carbon offset. It is such a wild and dynamic ecosystem compared to stoic terrestrial ecosystems. So Seatrees started a research project with Dr. Jen Smith at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to conduct the key science needed to quantify the climate benefit of kelp forests (if any). Today, we released a video on this water-parting work that seeks to answer the most challenging problems in carbon flux through kelp forests.

Can kelp forests help reverse climate change? Our new Seatrees documentary, Kelp Currency, dives into groundbreaking research with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to uncover the true climate potential of wild kelp forests. Kelp has long been a vital part of ocean ecosystems, but its ability to capture and store carbon could make it a game-changer in the fight against climate change. Despite their immense value, kelp forests remain critically underfunded. This film highlights the urgent need to invest in research that could unlock carbon finance for large-scale kelp restoration.
