Global operations are currently facing major disruptions due to an IT service outage affecting internet and intranet services, with significant impacts on Microsoft and other key platforms. This outage is affecting various sectors including corporations, financial services, media, public services, travel and transport. Consequences include payment and banking issues, stock exchange disruptions, grounded flights, offline websites, and even emergency service outages like 911 in the US. The root cause appears to be a misconfiguration in CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor software. Our July 19, 2024, 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, part of our Risk Intelligence Awareness, notes that this blackout will almost certainly continue to affect global business operations, supply chains, communications, payments, travel and emergency services. While efforts to resolve the issue are underway, expect some IT disruptions to persist, especially in supply chains and transport. There is also speculation about potential malicious cyber activity. US authorities are investigating an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump sustained a minor ear injury before security neutralized the attacker, one attendee was killed and two others injured.
