We just completed our 15th schoolyard transformation at REACH Academy and Cox Academy, and it's a game-changer! From kid-designed play structures to a magical nature exploration area, a new soccer pitch and multi-sport court, beautiful murals, and even a Little Town Library, this space is all about play, connection, and community. Huge shoutout to our incredible partners at KABOOM!, Oakland Unified School District, the generous support of Workday and Kaiser Permanente, and all the volunteers who made it happen! With 25 schoolyards in our sights by 2026, we’re creating places where kids can thrive—right where they live and learn. What a week we had with the beautiful Melrose Leadership Academy community completing our fourth schoolyard build of the year. Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, KABOOM!, and Oakland Unified School District joined with volunteers to completely revitalize the MLA Sherman TK-2nd grade campus. In just three days, our hardworking crew installed a new play structure with some of our most playful elements to date! Plus, we constructed three new nature areas including an outdoor classroom, a special TK area, and 30 trees. There’s also a mini soccer pitch, a new multi-sport court, multiple murals, and a Little Town Library full of books. What does it take to transform a shadeless asphalt playground into a joyful, tree-filled schoolyard? It takes an incredible village of partners and supporters (and a lot of mulch)! For our second schoolyard build of the year, Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, KABOOM!, and Oakland Unified School District teamed up to provide Oakland's Bella Vista Elementary School with an upgraded schoolyard, including new kid-designed play structures with dedicated areas for younger and older kids and five shade canopies to protect students on hot days. Volunteers removed asphalt to install two new nature exploration areas (including 13 new trees!) and upgrade existing garden spaces. Students will also enjoy a Little Town Library, a dedicated ball wall, a multi-sport court, and beautiful new murals.
