Seeking justice for older people by using the power of the law, educating the community & advocating across the nation

About us

SeniorLAW Center's mission is to improve the lives of older Pennsylvanians and protect their rights through legal representation, education and advocacy. We help save homes, strengthen families, fight domestic violence and abuse, and promote economic security. Our core values are excellence, compassion, respect, integrity, creativity, passion and optimism. Through the energies of our legal staff and corps of volunteer attorneys, SeniorLAW Center provides essential legal, outreach, advocacy and educational services, having a dramatic impact on the lives of elders and their families in the Philadelphia area and throughout the state. Our work enables elders in our communities, our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, our elderly neighbors, colleagues, and friends, to remain in their homes and communities, live free from abuse, maintain their independence, and improve the safety and economic security in their lives. All of SeniorLAW Center’s services for low-income seniors are free. SeniorLAW Center serves over 7,000 seniors each year throughout Philadelphia and, through its statewide SeniorLAW HelpLine, the entire Commonwealth. SeniorLAW Center has established a multitude of innovative programs to address the critical legal needs of low-income and vulnerable seniors, including victims of domestic violence, older tenants and homeowners, victims of financial exploitation and consumer fraud, grandparents raising grandchildren, the homebound and disabled, Asian, Latino and other immigrant elders who have little access to our system of justice. The legal issues facing our clients are increasingly complex and critical: mortgage foreclosure, eviction, and consumer and contractor fraud, shocking forms of financial exploitation, lengthy family law litigation, untangling title issues over generations, domestic violence and sexual assault against older women, health and financial decision-making, identity theft and other economic crimes.

Thank you to The Sarah Ralston Foundation and Foundation for Health Equity for inviting Executive Director Karen Buck and Center In The Park Inc's David Griffith to present at last week's "Advocacy in Action: Empowering Nonprofits to Champion Older Adults" event. It was an honor to share our knowledge on the legal boundaries for 501(c)(3) nonprofits in advocacy, and discuss examples of our own advocacy efforts on behalf of SeniorLAW Center clients. We were inspired by the incredible work and the commitment everyone shared to champion the needs of older adults.

Last - but certainly not least - we'd like to recognize Stephen A. Feldman, Esq., and his years of service to SeniorLAW Center's clients and mission for #ProBonoWeek. Steve served as Executive Director (back when SeniorLAW Center was Senior Citizen Judicare Project!), and later as a Board Member and as Board Chair. He continues to serve, providing invaluable counsel, mentorship, and leadership to the Access to Justice in Guardianship project and to SeniorLAW Center. "It is a great honor to be featured by SeniorLAW Center during its celebration of National Pro Bono Week for my work with its Access to Justice in Guardianship program, " Steve says. "During my career, I have participated in many programs in a pro bono capacity ranging from service on the Boards of Community Legal Services, SeniorLAW Center and the Alzheimer’s Association, to participating in numerous committees of a variety of community advocacy programs, particularly those promoting independence and the wellbeing of the aging population and others with disabilities.  None has been more rewarding than working with the Center’s Access to Justice in Guardianship program and its staff to protect and promote the rights of those who are, or perceived to be, incapacitated. Much more work must be done to make Justice a reality in these communities. I encourage attorneys of all ages to become similarly involved." Thank you, Steve, for the immeasurable impact you have made in the lives of countless older Pennsylvanians! American Bar Association #probono #pbweek #CelebrateProBono

Jesse Krohn, Esq., of Saul Ewing LLP is a passionate advocate for SeniorLAW Center’s mission seeking justice for older people. In addition to serving as a SeniorLAW Center Board Member, Jesse also volunteers for our Grandparents Raising Grandchildren project, saying: “I respond to callers who reach out to the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren project for assistance. Most clients do not expect to find themselves raising children into their 60s, 70s, and even 80s, and have been called to do so because a parent is deceased, incarcerated, or unwell. Keeping families together and supporting stability in the home benefits children, caregivers, and communities.” Thank you, Jesse, for your commitment to making justice a reality for older adults in Pennsylvania!
