By providing emergency shelter and tools for displaced families, we’re transforming despair into hope.

About us

ShelterBox delivers the essentials families need to begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of a disaster. From ShelterBoxes to ShelterKits, we can send immediate emergency shelter and other lifesaving equipment anywhere in the world. We instantly respond to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict and have responded to 275 disasters in 95 countries. ShelterBoxes typically contain a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, a basic tool kit, mosquito nets and a children’s activity pack. ShelterKits contain plastic sheeting, basic tools, rope and fixings that enable families to rapidly provide their own shelter or make repairs to their damaged houses in the aftermath of a disaster. The contents of our aid can be tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute aid on the ground, working closely with local leaders, organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief, providing emergency shelter for the world's most vulnerable people. www.ShelterBoxUSA.org

When floods ravaged Nkhotakota, Malawi in Feb 2024, Victoria, Christopher, and their two young sons lost everything. 'Our home was completely destroyed, and all our belongings were washed away,' Victoria shared. Thanks to ShelterBox and CARE Malawi, they received a shelter kit and cash assistance. Now, they have a temporary home and a fresh start. 'This shelter gives us our own space, rather than living with others,' Victoria says gratefully. The aid went beyond just shelter. Mosquito nets will protect them from malaria, while blankets and pots help restart their daily lives. Looking to the future, Victoria and Christopher plan to use the remaining funds to start a fish-selling business. 'We don't plan to go back to lake land... We will build a permanent place here,' Victoria says with determination. This story shows the important power of emergency aid. After disaster and conflict, thousands of people can find themselves without a place to call home. The sudden #displacement puts immense psychological stress on individuals, families, and communities. Many have endured multiple hardships even before reaching safety, and once they do, they face ongoing challenges and uncertainties. By providing emergency shelter, we can help restore a sense of safety, improve health, and promote well-being. For example, Nurgül suddenly lost her home after an earthquake struck Türkiye. After she received emergency aid, she spoke of how having a tent helped her feel secure and at home: "When I get in my tent and zip it up, I feel relieved. When there is no tent, the coffee I drink is not coffee. But here, in my tent, my coffee tastes like coffee." On #WorldMentalHealthDay, we want to say thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to provide feelings of security and safety to people around the world. #MentalHealthMatters #EmergencyShelter #ShelterIsAHumanRight

Imagine a flood has destroyed your home. You have to leave to find shelter, but you are repeatedly displaced and evicted by landowners. How can you begin to recover? At ShelterBox, we know that shelter is a human right. People deserve a place to call home, but more than that, they also deserve stability. That's why as part of our work in Somalia, we are securing land tenure for people who have left their homes because of drought, flooding, or conflict. This will ensure families are able to recover without fear of eviction for up to 15 years. #Somalia #EmergencyShelter #HumanitarianAid #SomaliaCrisis

If you were given a shelter kit, would you know how to best use the tools found inside? We know that most people are not shelter experts. That's why when we support communities with shelter kits, we also make sure we provide hands-on training to ensure they're getting the most out of their tools. In Malawi, we worked with local artisans to construct shelters for families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by flooding. Equipped with the new knowledge, they were then able to pass the techniques down to community members. Want to learn more about our aid items and how we work? “I was born and raised here in Nkhotakota; we have never experienced this kind of situation.” Tionge and Mary, along with their three children, were amongst the thousands of people who lost their homes after floods devastated communities in Malawi. The family was kind enough to sit down with us and reflect on their situation. Tionge explained what happened on the day of the floods. “The rain did not stop throughout the day, and there was a lot of shaking and noise during the night as the house structure was trying to withstand the winds. In the morning, I found out that all the walls were soaked with water since the rain was coupled with winds, which made it easier for the walls to get soaked.” The rain would continue for another three days. Mary told us, "There was water everywhere, from the rivers and sprouting from the ground. That was the time our house fell." Alongside our partner CARE Malawi, we provided Tionge and Mary with shelter kits, cash assistance, and household items like water filters, solar lights, and kitchen sets to help them begin recovering. We know we can't provide this life-changing aid without the help of our supporters. Thank you for helping us rebuild communities in Malawi and around the world #Malawi #MalawiFloods #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #DisasterAid #DisasterRelief #EmergencyShelter #ShelterBoxUSA
