Health center leaders describe staff members showing up for work immediately after #HurricaneHelene had passed — even though staff are overwhelmingly locals themselves, and flooded houses, missing or sick relatives, and food shortages were affecting them as well. Support for community health centers is key to Direct Relief’s Hurricane Helene response. Long before tropical storm season, Direct Relief works with health center partners in vulnerable areas to stage caches of emergency medicines and supplies, and funds the purchase and outfitting of mobile medical units like Cherokee Health System’s, which provide lifesaving care in the aftermath of disasters. Direct Relief is providing $25,000 emergency grants to 10 health centers responding to Hurricane Helene, including Appalachian Mountain Community Health Centers. In response to requests, Direct Relief has shipped emergency medications, water purification tablets, first aid supplies, emergency medical packs, hygiene kits, tetanus and hepatitis vaccines, and other essential resources to local organizations responding to Helene. https://lnkd.in/e9q8S6_h

"The humanitarian aid group Direct Relief says it has sent more than 2,000 EpiPen injections to community health centers, clinics and pharmacies across western North Carolina. “With every disaster, we get requests for EpiPens but this one is definitely an outlier,” said Alycia Clark, PharmD, Direct Relief’s chief pharmacy officer. Many of the people coming in with stings are electricians working to restore powerlines and other outdoor workers, Clark said." - The Associated Press https://lnkd.in/eYm6ZnsG

This story I wrote for Direct Relief looks at the challenges of getting insulin to people whose lives depend on it in a country where violent street gangs have shut down the sea port, airport and much of the capital city this year. A child in Haiti diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 10 has a life expectancy of 13 more years, compared to 57 more years of life for a similar child in the United States.

This past week, the Southeast U.S. has faced catastrophic destruction and record-level flooding as a result of Hurricane Helene. In response to this devastation, BD is working with our long-time partner, Direct Relief, to support the delivery of medical and emergency aid to the impacted region. In addition, two resources funded by BD and the BD Foundation have been deployed, including a Heart to Heart International Mobile Medical Unit (pictured here), and Planet Water Foundation AquaBlock Water Emergency Filtration Systems, capable of providing clean water to 6,000 people per day. And, in the last few days, BD associates from around the country have donated more than $25,000 to Direct Relief’s recovery work, and BD will match these donations.

Hurricane Helene, sweeping across the southeastern U.S., has caused health crises on all sides. Providers at Oceana Community Health, Inc., a community clinic in central Florida, has spent the last few days on the road in a mobile medical unit, setting up mobile clinics in hard-hit communities throughout the area. Local groups including Footprint Project are also working to install emergency energy support in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene created widespread outages. https://lnkd.in/ebTAaaFe
