This is huge. We’re so proud of David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John M. Jumper – they revolutionized the field and opened up previously unreachable possibilities. Starting in 2019, we took these Nobel-worthy breakthroughs and created practical applications for natural proteins in cosmetics, food, and advanced materials. With ProteinDiscovery.AI and our discovery engine Flourish™, any ingredients company can leverage the power of these tools without needing a dedicated and highly trained team of ML experts or bioinformaticians. Not only do we have a technology platform that puts these breakthroughs in the hands of our customers, but we also have a scalable business “Platform as a Service” model to match. The future is exceptionally bright.

This year’s Nobel Prize laureates in chemistry have revealed proteins’ secrets through computing and artificial intelligence. Chemists have long dreamed of fully understanding and mastering the chemical tools of life – proteins. This dream is now within reach. 2024 chemistry laureates Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper have successfully utilised artificial intelligence to predict the structure of almost all known proteins. This year’s chemistry laureate David Baker has learned how to master life’s building blocks and create entirely new proteins. The potential of their discoveries is enormous. Proteins’ amazing versatility as chemical tools is reflected in the vast diversity of life. That we can now so easily visualise the structure of these small molecular machines is mind boggling; it allows us to better understand how life functions, including why some diseases develop, how antibiotic resistance occurs or why some microbes can decompose plastic. The ability to create proteins that are loaded with new functions is just as astounding. This can lead to new nanomaterials, targeted pharmaceuticals, more rapid development of vaccines, minimal sensors and a greener chemical industry – to name just a few applications that are for the greatest benefit of humankind. Calling all bioprocess and engineering experts! We’re looking for partners to scale our capabilities and support the high level of inbound demand across key material production and process development initiatives. If that’s your team, visit shiru.com/partner-network to connect with us. When we launched ProteinDiscovery.ai earlier this year, we had a hunch there would be demand for our platform but had no idea to expect the level of inbound we’ve already received. Just three months after launching, we’re proud to share that we’re managing more requests to scale ingredients we’re discovering than we can handle internally. Fortunately, we know that there are numerous companies operating strain development, fermentation, and DSP at various scales as a service. We’re building a network of scaling partners to enable Shiru to focus on what we do best - AI-enabled protein discovery - while delivering high quality materials to our partners via end-to-end support by our expert team. Accelerating the transition to biobased materials won’t be done by one company alone, but by syndicates of best-in-class teams. Shiru’s protein discoveries will get to market faster with excellent partners working alongside us, and we’re requesting submissions from partners across the globe. By partnering, we provide an unparalleled value proposition to our customers as a one-stop-shop for protein discovery and creation at scales relevant for cosmetics, food, and advanced materials. Going from “I need a new protein ingredient” to relevant samples delivered to your lab has never been this easy, and we’re delighted to be building this new paradigm. If your team is a great fit, get in touch. And if you know a team who’d be a great fit, please share this opportunity with them. Let’s make accessing new, sustainable protein ingredients as easy as 1, 2, 3.

A win-win is the sweetest win. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition North America, Inc. to develop and commercialize sweet proteins for use in beverages and specialty products. This is the first foray by AHN in sweet proteins – long considered a holy grail application for the food industry. We’re combining unparalleled strengths from both teams to bring natural, functional ingredients to market: Shiru’s powerful AI-driven discovery capabilities and AHN’s deep expertise in fermentation. Better food systems can’t wait – at Shiru, we believe AI is the way to get us there faster. And we’ve put it in your hands at ProteinDiscovery.ai

Millions of dollars on empirical tests? Or protein language models (PLMs) and other machine learning tools that rapidly sift through hundreds of millions of proteins and identify the best functional proteins for any given application? We'll go with the latter.

🌱 Developing delicious and nutritious alternative protein products can be a time-consuming process. ⌛ AI can analyze vast amounts of recipe data and consumer preferences to suggest novel flavor combinations and ingredient pairings. This can significantly speed up the development process and lead to more innovative and consumer-friendly products. There are billions of distinct proteins, and finding the right solution is “like looking for a needle in a haystack”, according to Jasmin Hume, PhD Founder & CEO of Shiru “Thanks to machine learning and the availability of large datasets, we are in the middle of a revolution in how biological structure, function and interactions are inferred,” says Jasmin. “Shiru uses a combination of protein language models (PLMs) and other machine learning tools to rapidly sift through hundreds of millions of proteins and identify the best functional proteins for any given application. This is game-changing. Rather than spend years and millions of dollars on empirical tests, we arrive at the best solution in a fraction of the time and cost.” 📰 Learn more from Jasmin and others in our deep dive on smart manufacturing in the latest edition of Protein Production Technology International! 🔗https://hubs.ly/Q02D08ss0 #alternativeprotein #sustainability #smartmanufacturing #proteintechnology #innovation #ai #machinelearning
