Congratulations to Beth Heise, RN, Emergency Department, our latest DAISY Award recipient, who helped a patient and her family navigate a very stressful and scary experience. "My mom suffered two strokes and was brought in by ambulance. Beth was one of the staff that met the ambulance and continued care back in the treatment room," explained the patient's daughter. "I should mention that my mom is a retired ICU nurse who worked at the original Silver Cross on Walnut Street. To say she is not the easiest patient is an understatement." Beth kept the family informed of what was going on with tests and treatment, and what was to come. "She treated mom with the utmost respect as a fellow nurse, almost like a peer. We could watch mom's fear slowly start to dissipate. She knew that Beth 'got it.' It was amazing to watch these two generations of nurses communicate with each other. My mom knew she was in great hands, and probably more importantly, was being respected for her knowledge. Beth is a shining beacon of what being a nurse means," added the grateful daughter. https://lnkd.in/g63jrQkP #SilverCrossProud

At his daughter Kari’s July 14 wedding, Jim Galen and his sister, Linda Mitchell, shared a celebratory dance, and not just for the new couple. Each had potentially life-saving heart procedures at the Midwest Institute for Heart at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox only weeks before. Linda was first and ended up having two stent procedures a few weeks apart. As she followed up with her doctor in between procedures, she brought along a copy of her brother’s heart scan results taken at a hospital closer to his Aurora home. Jim wasn’t having any symptoms, but he knew his dad had a stroke and heart issues at 53. He was shocked when the scan showed he had a 95 percent chance of having a serious heart event. In fact, one of his arteries was 99 percent blocked, and another 95 percent. He had double-bypass surgery less than a month before his daughter’s wedding. Jim got to walk Kari down the aisle, make the father-of-the-bride speech, and, maybe most importantly, have that daddy-daughter dance. Later in the evening, Linda requested a song she and Jim could dance to: “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme to the movie, “Titanic.” Jim and Linda can’t say enough about the care they got at Silver Cross. “The doctors – cardiologists, surgeons – nurses, technicians, all came in to check on me, and they were all great,” said Jim. Linda added, “This has been the greatest blessing of my life. What happened to me saved my brother’s life.” Read Linda and Jim’s story here: https://bit.ly/4dVO5fX

🐝#BeingExcellentEveryday - Congratulations to Jennette Parish, Certified Nursing Assistant on Unit 4:3, on her recent BEE Award! "I was in a panic most of the time during my 7-day hospitalization. I was very short of breath due to pneumonia and COPD and needed assistance to go to the bathroom," wrote Jennette's nominator. "When Jennette was on duty during the night, I knew when I pushed the button for help, I would see her face almost immediately. She helped me in every way, always reassured me that she let the pulmonary department know that I needed my rescue inhaler and that they would be coming soon. She rearranged my bed and pillows, and she made me feel like she was my private CNA. I could never thank her enough for her kindness. There is no other like her! She is an Angel of Mercy!" Congratulations and thank you, Jennette, for being excellent every day for your patients! Is there a Silver Cross Nursing Assistant you'd like to recognize for the BEE Award? #FeelGreatFriday - Thanks to the dedicated work by Shirley Ryan AbilityLab therapists at Silver Cross Hospital, Bo Boll of Mokena was able to walk out of the hospital after a few weeks in May 2023, even though Guillain-Barre Syndrome had earlier rendered him a quadriplegic. Since his release last year, Boll has by no means been a stranger. He’s been back several times, bringing lunch for the staff and, as a carpenter by trade, making therapy equipment that he thought of or was requested by the staff. Now, nearly fully recovered, Bo, 75, is helping the therapists help other patients get back on their feet. On July 26, he started volunteering on the Inpatient Physical Therapy unit at Silver Cross, talking to the patients two or three days a week and giving them hope. “I’m well on my way to being 110 percent recovered,” says Bo. “And I am so grateful. I want to keep giving back.” Read Bo’s story here: https://bit.ly/4dHQxXh 📸 (from left) Inpatient Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Lindsay Heidrich, Cheryl Tindall and Krista Schomig on Bo's first day as a Silver Cross Hospital Volunteer 💜 💚
