Ray Duncan founded Silver Oak with Justin Meyer in 1972, and it’s now owned and operated by Ray’s sons, David and Tim, with a commitment to innovative and sustainable viticulture practices across its vineyard properties, winemaking facilities, tasting rooms and cooperage. In addition to acquiring OVID Napa Valley in 2017, the Duncan family also founded Twomey Cellars in 1999 and Timeless Napa Valley in 2020.

Last July, I packed up everything and left New York for Sonoma, CA. It was a split decision after being accepted into the Silver Oak & Twomey Apprenticeship Program in partnership with The Veraison Project. I didn’t know what to expect but my key goal was to truly immerse myself into wine to be a better advocate & leader for those that are underrepresented. It’s been a huge sacrifice and journey. Whether you’re new to the wine industry or an emerging wine entrepreneur, I highly suggest you apply for this masterclass experience. The family at Silver Oak, affectionately know as “The Bunch,” provide a sense of ease and kindness that I have never experienced before in a work environment. For 12 months, the wine country life will transformed me and provided a strong, proven blueprint of best in class wine business. As the end of my assignment is quickly approaching, I reflect on the richness of the experience, unexpected challenges, and all the possibilities for the future.
