National LGBT History month was established in 1994 by Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson. This month was to focus and celebrate LGBTQ+ history and the contributions of individuals within the community. October was specifically chosen to align with National Coming Out Day (October 11) and the anniversary of the first LGBTQ+ rights march on Washington in 1979.
