Each year, SMUD hosts the Youth Energy Summit (YES) to empower today’s youth for tomorrow’s future. This 3-day climate and sustainability summit brings together junior and senior students from Sacramento County high schools. These students collaborate on community service projects and enjoy making friends while sharing strategies. They learn about sustainable transportation from experts, compete for scholarships and have fun discovering ways to improve our planet. They even heard from SMUD Board Vice President Gregg Fishman and Board Member Brandon Rose, who highlighted how they will play a crucial role in helping us achieve our zero carbon goal. Check out one of our Shine-funded projects with the Center for Land-Based Learning! Their Restoration and Urban Agriculture program empowers high school students to dive into natural resource careers through hands-on experience in habitat restoration and community gardening. Students maintain gardens after school while exploring pathways in city planning and urban agriculture advocacy. The program also builds leadership skills like innovative problem-solving and public speaking. Students educate their peers on important topics such as the benefits of urban agriculture, food access disparities and ways to become engaged community advocates. Thanks to the amazing kids from Luther Burbank and Grant High Schools for letting us join them to see all the amazing things their doing! #ShineAward #CommunityGardens #EnvironmentalEducation #FutureLeaders #Sustainability #HandsOnLearning
