  • Welcome to Meet the SDMH Communications Committee Series Week 2 ➡ Today we are so excited to introduce Sofía Mildrum Chana! 📚 Sofía is a fifth-year doctoral candidate in the Medical/Clinical Psychology doctoral program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Human Biology from the The University of Kansas and her Masters of Arts in Psychology from UAB. She joined SDMH in 2023 and is the person behind some of the LinkedIn posts you see on our site. 📲 Her research interests are broadly focused on addictive behaviors and digital mental health, specifically on how to leverage digital mental health platforms to address disparities in care access for underserved communities. Her dissertation evaluates how Hispanic/Latinx dementia caregivers engage with social media platforms. Clinically, she aims to become a bilingual licensed clinical psychologist, delivering culturally and linguistically sensitive mental health care. 🎇 Fun fact: Sofía is originally from Madrid (Spain), and if you ask her, she can talk about jamón and other Spanish foods for hours!

  • Register for the upcoming event "Making Sense of the Research on Social Media and Youth Mental Health": https://lnkd.in/gCS8MDdC Date: October 8, 2024 Livestreamed Discussion: 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM EST Q&A with teens: 3:45-4:15 EST There is widespread concern about the high rates of mental health difficulties affecting adolescents and emerging adults, but considerable debate in the field about the causes of the alarming rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicidality. To move the field forward and determine how we can best help youth, we need to move beyond sensational news headlines and have real conversations among people who disagree on what the evidence says but share a deep commitment to supporting youth. In a discussion moderated by Dr. Bethany Teachman and Dr. Nancy Deutsch Dr. Nancy Deutsch (Co-Directors of UVA’s Thriving Youth in a Digital Environment), we will interview Dr. Jonathan Haidt and Dr. Candice Odgers (leading figures in this field with differing views on what the research really says about the role of social media in supporting or harming youth mental health) to understand why they draw different conclusions from the research, learn where they agree and disagree, and consider what research is needed to truly move the field forward and get to the solutions we all seek.
