A Force for Nature Spotlight: Shortly after moving to Sonoma County, Miles Horton, an avid hiker, runner, and birdwatcher, learned about Sonoma Land Trust and found others who shared his passion for conservation and climate change resilience. At an outing at the San Pablo Baylands where he learned about our restoration program on the bay, Miles shared that he was impressed by the Land Trust’s proactive approach to solving the dual challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss – taking bold and swift action and “paving the way” for managing lands for climate resilience. Hood Mountain Regional Park just got bigger! Acquired by Sonoma County Regional Parks earlier this month, the 100-Acre Ranch property sits at a critical location, bridging the gap between the Regional Park and the eastern boundary of Sonoma County Ag + Open Space District’s Saddle Mountain Preserve. This vital link creates over 11,000 acres of protected public land across the southern Mayacamas mountains to the Napa County line, supporting biodiversity, wildlife habitat, environmental education opportunities, and a future interconnected trail network. Sonoma Land Trust is proud to have contributed to the purchase of 100-Acre Ranch, along with the Dave and Vicki Stollmeyer Family Fund, managed by the Sonoma Valley Catalyst Fund, the Sonoma County Parks Foundation and its Bill & Dave Legacy Fund, local Measure M – Parks for All and local park mitigation fees. Prescribed burns are an important element in restoring our natural ecosystems, and it’s important to keep our community informed when they take place. Before each burn, we display roadside signage notifications, contact adjacent neighbors via email and written notices, post alerts on social media and local press, and notify the Watch Duty app. In addition, we have introduced a new smoke notification email for our prescribed burns that are conducted on Sonoma Land Trust properties to keep our neighbors informed. Learn more and sign up here: https://ow.ly/3tOf50SFHAF. And sign up for Watch Duty for a comprehensive smoke alert system for your area. #prescribedburns #goodfire

Discover nature nearby on an urban walk with us! On Tuesday evenings in July and August, we will explore the creek systems and trails that run through Santa Rosa while learning about the planning and design work that has gone into creating these spaces and restoring these ecosystems with Sonoma County Ag + Open Space District and other knowledgeable partners. Tonight, 7/16, is our first urban walk of the season along the Colgan Creek Trail. We will be joined by the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation and the City of Santa Rosa Creeks Team to examine the creek restoration in its various stages and learn about future plans for this hidden gem. This is a great opportunity to unwind after work, enjoy a leisurely stroll in the shade, connect with neighbors and community members, and have fun! We hope to see you there!
