Our Detroit team just returned from the Michigan Outdoor Summit this past weekend! Representing SOS, they had the opportunity to network with other great nonprofits like Chill Foundation and #DetroitOutdoors, all while having conversations around #sustainability, #diversity, and #inclusion in the outdoors. They wrapped up the weekend with some glorious fall riding at Crystal Mountain with Crystal Community Ski Club. As the winter season approaches, these #opportunities to connect with changemakers in the community are pivotal to SOS' impact and the youth we serve.

SOS changes young lives, building character and leadership in youth through mentoring outdoors
About us
No matter what social, societal, or economic barriers exist—SOS Outreach believes every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. It starts with skiing or snowboarding, because it’s on the mountain that kids unearth the courage to step outside of their comfort zones, develop new strengths within themselves and cultivate lifelong skills. Since 1993, we’ve been using mentorship and a proven, multi-year curriculum, to empower kids and teenagers to discover their true potential. Mission SOS Outreach changes young lives, builds character and develops leadership in youth who face risks through mentoring outdoors. Core Values SOS Outreach has six core values: courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion and humility. These values are central to our programs and operation.

Meet Keegan, a fifth year SOS Outreach participant! This summer, Keegan spent his time working at Epic Mountain Gear as part of SOS's Career Development Program. We're proud to partner with SOS on initiatives like the Career Development Program, offering youth the chance to build professional skills and gain real-world experience, providing them with the opportunity to open the door to a career in the outdoor industry.

“It is central to the mission of SOS Outreach that no family is denied participation based on financial limitations,” said Elizabeth Williams, Chief Operating Officer of SOS Outreach. “We provide all programs at a significantly discounted rate to ensure affordability and accessibility.” The outdoors are for everyone. Through significantly reduced fees for service and additional #scholarships, we are ensuring that no youth is denied access to outdoor-based #mentorship. We recently came across an insightful article highlighting the critical role of mentorship in empowering young people in today’s workforce. As we witness a significant demographic shift—with baby boomers retiring and diverse generations like Gen Z and Alpha entering the job market—the need for strong mentorship programs has never been more apparent. At SOS Outreach, we are dedicated to creating opportunities for young people to thrive through meaningful mentorship. Our #CareerDevelopment Program aligns, in many ways, with the article’s emphasis on building positive relationships, skill development, and community connections. By fostering mentorship, we not only help young people navigate workplace challenges but also equip them with the tools they need to succeed in their careers. This approach not only benefits individuals but also enriches the entire organization. Let’s continue to champion mentorship and support the next generation in reaching their full potential! Team. That's a word that humbles me daily. We had our first team town hall to kick off the 24.25 year at SOS Outreach this week, and I am honored to work with a team that walks together to increase access to opportunities for kids to achieve their full potential. Let's go for this year. We are stronger together!

A big thank you to the Truckee Chamber of Commerce for recognizing Heather Schwartz, our North Lake Tahoe Program Manager, with the Employee of the Year Award! The success of our programs relies on extensive behind-the-scenes work, and Heather goes above and beyond to provide new growth opportunities for our 250 local participants. Her dedication has made a significant impact in the community and fostered a culture of belonging- both on and off the mountain. We are incredibly grateful to have her on our team. Congratulations, Heather! https://lnkd.in/gXAWJz3f #truckee #tahoe #belonging #impact #community #mentorship

Amazing story and words shared by SOS Detroit Program Coordinator, Uriel - check it out!
“To see yourself surrounded by trees, I’ve seen the impact it has on the youth that I’ve worked with. There’s no greater pride or joy that I experience than getting to be apart of that moment that it clicks… I’ll continue to provide these opportunities for as long as I can, because these youth deserve it,” Uriel Llanas Vargas, SOS Outreach Detroit program coordinator. Check out this reel from the Sierra Club to highlight how incredible Uriel is and the energy he is bringing to increase opportunities for youth connect with and find belonging in the outdoors. I am stoked to work with him.
We thought this quote from @uri_llanas embodies so much of the work that he does and the impact that he has. “To see yourself surrounded by trees, I’ve seen the impact it has on the youth that I’ve worked with. There’s no greater pride or joy that I experience than getting to be apart of that moment that it clicks… I’ll continue to provide these opportunities for as long as I can, because these yo
