  • As we continue our Board of Directors spotlight series, get to know Secretary Charles Edens, who hails from Sumter County. 🏠 Where is your hometown? I was born in Sumter. I grew up in Dalzell, about 7 miles out of Sumter on my family farm.    🌱 How would you like to see Sumter County grow in the next year? I would like to see Sumter County continue to grow at the slow steady pace that we have seen the last 10-15 years. Enough to call it growth but not too much to cause traffic problems.    ❓What is an interesting fact about your county? Sumter County (the Stateburg area) is actually really in the center of the state and was actually considered a possibility for the state capital because of this.    🦢 What’s your favorite place in Sumter County? That's a tough question, but I guess I'll have to say Swan Lake.    🗳️ What’s an important issue in your county right now? The proposed capital projects question is being considered by council at this time to hopefully be placed on the ballot in the general election in November.    🏦 How did you get involved in public service? I was appointed to the Planning Commission in about 1992 and served for six years. I then ran for County Council in 1998 and am now in my seventh term or 26th year.    🏪 What do you do when you aren’t serving Sumter County? I am a full time Realtor involved in commercial, land and residential real estate. I enjoy doing projects around the house. I am currently building a tree house for the grandchildren.    📖 What’s the last book you read cover to cover? A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffet    🐶 What’s a cause that you’re passionate about? Animal rescue. Saving Sumter's Strays. They run the County Adoption Center.    🤭 What’s a little-known fact about you that might surprise people? I raced dirt bikes for about 10 years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.     🚙 Where is a place you’ve always wanted to visit? I would like for my wife, Bobbi, and I to take our dog in a camper and take a few weeks to go to the corn belt and work our way to west Texas and back along the gulf.
