About us
SIG is built on a foundation of academic rigor and breadth, professional effectiveness, and technological advances. Founded in 1998, SIG is a consulting think-tank that uses high-end geographic analysis to answer questions in the fields of ecology, economics, planning, and engineering. SIG’s interdisciplinary team of Ph.D.-level experts brings decades of innovative research experience from a breadth of environmental fields to tackle some of the most challenging problems in environmental management. Currently, our focus lies in four particular areas: 1) natural hazards assessment, planning, and mitigation, 2) ecosystem service quantification and management, 3) forest health and carbon analysis, and 4) image classification. SIG’s group members are experts in using tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, spatial data mining, and dynamic spatial modeling. But SIG is more than a technical GIS consulting firm. Our analysts are also specialists in relevant fields such as landscape ecology and forestry. Too often, firms and their technicians are not proficient in the field they are applying the spatial analysis to. As a result, clients must often spend large amounts of time "hand-holding" consultants. With their extensive experience in closely integrating spatial analysis with substantive research, SIG’s analysts are able to quickly grasp complex problems and apply the appropriate tools to solving these problems with minimal client time and support. This versatility allows SIG to be efficient and dynamically involved in all aspects of a project, from routine tasking, to managing projects and producing deliverables.

🌱 Revolutionizing Environmental Cleanup with Biochar & Nanotechnology! 🌱 Heavy metals and toxic elements threaten both human health and ecosystems, but researchers at the University of Missouri and #ForestProductsLaboratory are paving a path toward safer, more sustainable remediation. They’re combining biochar, a carbon-rich pollutant-absorbing material, with nanotechnology to enhance its effectiveness. This innovative approach can remove heavy metals and organic pollutants from soil, water, and air more efficiently. Supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this technology holds promise for a cleaner, healthier future. Biochar can be produced from low value woody material generated from hazardous fuels reduction and forest health projects, such as those planned under California's Million Acre Strategy. Heavy metals and toxic elements in the environment pose serious risks to human health and natural ecosystems. While traditional remediation methods exist, researchers at University of Missouri and #ForestProductsLaboratory are finding more cost-effective and sustainable solutions. Biochar, a carbon-rich material, shows great potential in cleaning up pollution. But it has limitations. That's where nanotechnology comes in! By combining nanomaterials with biochar, researchers can create powerful tools to remove heavy metals, organic contaminants, and other pollutants from water, soil, and air. 🌍 Biodiversity: Our Planet’s First Line of Defense 🌱 Biodiversity doesn’t just mean a variety of species; it’s nature’s built-in system for resilience. Healthy, diverse ecosystems can help reduce the severity of wildfires, flooding, and other climate-change-driven natural disasters. Wetlands, for example, absorb floodwaters, while diverse forests are better equipped to resist and recover from wildfires. By protecting biodiversity, we’re not only supporting wildlife but also safeguarding our communities against climate impacts. Tools like Planscape (landscape resilience), se.plan (landscape restoration), and TerraBio (sustainable agriculture) all aim to contribute to this line of defense. Meet Nicholas Miley, otherwise known as Nick, one of the dedicated team members driving impactful work at SIG! :herb: Nick’s journey to SIG was sparked by friends and colleagues who had worked with us and shared great things about the company culture and the meaningful projects they were involved in. While working as an editor and writer for a consumer review website, Nick longed to get back into the forestry and environmental space. When a friend asked if he wanted to help with a field project, he jumped at the chance. His work with Jason Moghaddas and the Natural Hazards team allowed him to combine his passion for the environment with his skills in writing, photography, and videography—plus his scientific training. It was such a great fit that he transitioned into a full-time role! Nick is most passionate about two things in his work: connecting with people and sharing their incredible work and stories, and addressing the wildfire crisis that is impacting the West. Spending a lot of his free time outdoors, Nick has witnessed firsthand the devastation fires have caused in the Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascade ranges—areas he holds close to his heart. Working at SIG allows him to engage with wildfire resilience on multiple levels, from policy review and software implementation to public outreach and forest treatment plans. For Nick, this work is not just a job—it’s a way to protect the landscapes he loves and make a real difference in combating wildfires. Fun fact: Nick’s bachelor’s degree is in Classic Civilizations! 🌲 Thinning forests is essential for healthy landscapes and wildfire prevention! 🌲 Managing our forests through thinning helps reduce the amount of dense vegetation that can fuel catastrophic wildfires. By carefully removing some trees and underbrush, we create more resilient ecosystems, promoting the growth of stronger trees and reducing the risk of intense fires that threaten both wildlife and communities. As we celebrate National Forest Products Week, let’s remember that sustainable forest management practices like thinning not only protect us from wildfires but also support the health of our forests for generations to come. 🌿 Healthy forests = Safer communities + Thriving ecosystems. #NationalForestProductsWeek #ForestManagement #WildfirePrevention #SustainableForestry #HealthyForests
Sustainably harvesting wood is an important part of forest management, and is good for forests and local economies. Commercial thinning—when loggers use a management plan to remove certain trees from a forest—reduces wildfire risks, promotes healthy forest stands, and creates wildlife habitat while providing raw material to make wood products. #NationalForestProductsWeek

We're so proud of our managing principal and co-founder, David Saah. Last David represented SIG at the White House FireTech Innovation Roundtable - a true honor! #SIGSpotlight #TechForGood
Last week Pyregence principle investigator David Saah had the privilege of representing Pyregence and SIG at the White House FireTech Innovation Roundtable, at the invitation of the Biden-Harris Administration. Speaking on the event, David shared, "I am deeply honored to have been invited to the White House FireTech Innovation Roundtable on behalf of the Biden-Harris Administration. It was a privilege to join agency experts, scientists, innovators, industry leaders, and manufacturers to explore solutions for accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge wildfire monitoring, management, and response technologies. The discussions were both inspiring and insightful, highlighting the importance of collaboration, open science, and integrated platforms to tackle the growing challenges of wildfire risk in the face of climate change. It’s clear that bridging the gap between research and real-world application, sustaining partnerships, and aligning incentives will be crucial to deploying these technologies at scale. The dialogue reaffirmed my belief that public-private partnerships and standardized open data practices are essential for creating sustainable solutions. I’m grateful to be part of this incredible network and excited about the opportunities to continue working together toward resilient landscapes and safer communities. Thank you to everyone involved for your vision, commitment, and collaboration. Looking forward to what we can achieve together!" #innovation #firetech #wildfiremanagement #collaboration #climateaction #publicprivatepartnerships
