#Anxiety is something many of us deal with, but its long-term effects on #dementia risk have been a bit of a mystery—until now. CNN recently reported on a groundbreaking study from the Hunter Community Hub that provides some important insights, especially for older adults. Researchers found that those with chronic anxiety had a 2.8x higher risk of developing #dementia (a 3.2x higher risk if the anxiety started later in life). The good news is that when anxiety is managed, there is minimal increased risk compared to those without anxiety. There are many anxiety management tactics, and finding the right ones for you can take time and practice. #Meditation, #exercise, #talktherapy, and medication are some of the most common, but maintaining #mentalhealth looks different for everyone. We all know that a healthy diet results in a healthy body. But did you know that your diet also significantly impacts your #BrainHealth? 🧠 At the recent Alzheimer's Association® International Conference, a study was presented with findings from over 130,000 American adults over the course of 40+ years. Results found that eating ultra processed foods like bacon and hot dogs twice a week increased study participants’ risk of #Dementia by 14% compared to those who ate less than three servings per month. The New York Times recently compiled several modern studies on the link between processed foods and a decline in brain health. In fact, a study conducted in the UK with over 72,000 adults concluded that just a 10% increase in processed foods to one’s diet can lead to a 25% increase in the risk of developing dementia.Researchers are still in deliberations as to why ultra processed red meats might be affecting our brains. It could be that a diet high in these foods is also linked to obesity and #CardiovascularDisease, which in turn, results in neurological diseases. Another theory is that these foods alter our gut biome, which is directly wired to our brains. While there are still limitations to the results of these studies, it is still clear that diet choices make a significant impact on brain health. That being said, it can be extremely difficult to make complete 360° changes to one’s diet. Dr. Hussein Yassine, a professor of #neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, says that implementing simple substitutions can be the key to limiting the presence of ultra processed foods in our diets. Instead of soda, reach for lightly sweetened tea or sparkling water. Try to steer away of having ultra processed meats like sausage or bacon for breakfast, and opt for alternative protein sources like eggs, turkey or lean chicken. Remember, taking care of your brain is just as important as taking care of your body. When it comes to #Alzheimers and #DementiaCare, #earlydetection is key to managing symptoms. Researchers at Murdoch University have developed a new screening test which involves self-reporting concerns in six cognitive areas. In an article by Medical News Today, Hamidreza Sohrabi explains how implementing regular checkpoints on memory, language, attention, concentration, and executive function can help to make #earlydiagnosis more accessible and less costly. In fact, early diagnosis, while tricky to obtain, allows for interventions that can slow disease progression. Dr. Sohrabi’s check-in questionnaire, called The McCusker Subjective Cognitive Impairment Inventory (#McSCI) has shown 99.9% accuracy in identifying individuals with subjective cognitive decline, a known risk factor for #dementia. These promising results may take us one step further in streamlining Alzheimer’s and dementia care, which is often a confusing and inefficient process. After a year of #caregiving for a loved one with a serious brain injury, Dr. Mica Estrada realized that she was adopting a few common #caregiver habits that needed to change for her to maintain her own #wellbeing. In a recent Psychology Today article, she outlines some key findings from her own experiences that have drastically minimized what she refers to as the “distress reciprocity” cycle, the very natural, yet potentially harmful human response to internalize patients’ pain. Disrupting this cycle is not only key for maintaining #MentalHealth, but also plays a positive role in improving #PatientOutcomes. Below are the recommended strategies that #caregivers can implement into their own lives to minimize the effects of distress on their ability to care for their patients. 1️⃣ Identify what part of the distress is yours and what isn’t. This awareness can alleviate pressure and prevent emotional escalation, benefiting everyone involved. Sometimes, it is best to step away from a situation so that you can process what is happening. 2️⃣ That being said, don't hold in your emotions for the sake of others. Sharing your feelings can bring relief. Find an outlet for your concerns by speaking to a friend or family member or utilizing talk therapy. 3️⃣ When your loved one is distressed, practice #mindfulness. Pause, and breathe deeply. By not letting distress stick to you, you can better support your loved one.It is no secret that caregiving requires an immense amount of patience.
