We are so happy to share that the focus on our mission to RETURN BUFFALO TO THE LANDS, LIVES AND ECONOMIES of Native American people yielded another year of great results. With the help of our donors, funders, and partners in 2024, Tanka Fund: RETURNED 246 BUFFALO to their Native homelands. Tanka Fund’s work to restore Buffalo to tribal lands and caretakers fosters a revival of cultural, economic and ecological balance, supporting Native health and spiritual renewal. In addition to our partnership with The Nature Conservancy, Tanka Fund also worked with the Minnesota Zoo and private ranchers to acquire Buffalo for our caretaker partners. Tanka Fund is the only organization that works solely with and financially funds private Native American family- and community-owned Buffalo ranches. ADDED MORE RANCHER PARTNERS for a total of 24 NATIVE RANCHERS in the Tanka Fund family. We now partner with Native Buffalo ranchers in 8 states. There are currently 9 more Native ranchers in the process of becoming Tanka partners. Buffalo need caretakers, and we are focused on helping expand existing Native herds and giving new ranchers the assistance and animals they need. PROVIDED $937,813 in grants, Buffalo, equipment, fencing, and technical services to our rancher partners. We are Returning the Lands, Lives, and Economies of Native American People one day at a time.
About us
For nearly 10 years, we have been working to provide animals, grants and technical assistance to Native American buffalo caretakers who, in turn, serve their own communities through maintaining cultural herds, providing healthy buffalo meat to community members, and mentoring younger ranchers. We return buffalo to their homelands Our work honors the cultural, spiritual and environmental significance of the Buffalo Nation to Native American communities, as well as addresses their challenges in growing economically and environmentally sustainable herds using traditional caretaking methods. Tanka Fund works to empower private Native American buffalo caretakers of all herd sizes and across all tribes, including established ranchers, those who are just starting new herds, and those who seek to convert from cattle to buffalo. We work with buffalo caretakers across all tribes We serve Native American buffalo caretakers across all U.S.-based tribes and the Buffalo Nation. For example, in 2023, Tanka Fund provided buffalo, grants and technical assistance to 19 caretakers. The ranchers are members of a variety of Native American tribes, including Oglala Lakota, Sicangu Lakota, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, Modoc Nation, Ojibwe, Cheyenne River Sioux, Lipan Apache, Muscogee (Creek) and Standing Rock Sioux. We take care of the buffalo and the buffalo take care of the land Tanka Fund and the caretakers serve our sister nation, the Buffalo. Because of that ancestral relationship, we do not see them solely as animals. We take care of the buffalo and the buffalo take care of the land. And because the buffalo are a keystone species, they contribute to prairie restoration, soil health, and land regeneration. Throughout our history, the buffalo has been considered a sacred being that provides sustenance, clothing, and economic stability. Tanka Fund draws its purpose from this connection, rooted in a creation story that guides every aspect of the organization.

Tanka Fund’s Climate Smart program, which provides incentives to Buffalo and cattle ranchers for sustainable land management practices, just completed its first full year. Range ecologists Zintkala Eiring and Janét Moore recently provided an overview of the program's 2024 progress: Tanka Fund has enrolled 12 Climate Smart ranchers as of Jan. 13, 2025: 11 ranchers are Buffalo caretakers 1 is a cattle rancher 9 ranchers represent historically underserved populations, including 4 veterans The 12 ranchers represent 3,628 Buffalo in CO, TX, WY, MN, ND and SD, and 80 cattle in KS. Six different Tribes are represented: Modoc in Kansas Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in Minnesota Creek/Seminole and Lipan Apache in Texas Oglala Lakota and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in South Dakota Funding for the program is made possible by the “Grass is Greener on the Other Side: Climate Smart Beef and Bison Commodities” 5-year grant awarded to South Dakota State University (SDSU) in 2023 by the USDA Partnership for Climate Smart Commodities Program. Tanka Fund is a major partner in this award, as well as the National Bison Association (NBA), AgSpire, Millborn Seeds, and Cold Creek Buffalo Company. Just a yearling out here, doing the hard work of being iconic and restoring the land — one bite of grass at a time. 🦬🌾 Here are 5 facts about Buffalo yearlings: Herd Dynamics: Yearling bison, typically aged 1–2 years, tend to stay with the maternal herd, which is made up of adult females and their young. This grouping provides them with safety and opportunities to learn essential social behaviors. Exploration Tendencies: Although yearlings mostly remain with the herd for protection, they’re naturally curious and may venture out a bit to explore their environment. This exploration helps them develop survival skills and adapt to their surroundings. Social Learning: Staying within the herd allows yearlings to observe and learn important behaviors, such as how to forage effectively and recognize predators. These lessons are critical for their growth and eventual role in the herd. Diet: They graze primarily on grasses and sedges, just like adults, as their digestive system is fully developed. Hump Development: Their humps are less pronounced than adults but start becoming more noticeable by this stage.
