“As a person with a disability, and an educator in Human Computer Interaction, daily events lead me to recognize the importance of accessibility in the lives of students,” says Catherine Beaton, Associate Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. Beaton plans to introduce #accessibility in her ISTE110 Ethics in Computing course through an opening lecture that provides a broad definition of accessibility, along with an examination of the U.S. population in terms of disability, literacy, and bias. This approach will set the stage for students to understand the critical role accessibility plays in ethical computing practices. Congratulations to Catherine Beaton!

"By teaching students to create accessible materials, I hope they will continue to use, share, and advocate for these practices in their school, personal, and professional lives,” says Sandra Watts, PhD, Interdisciplinary Faculty at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Watts, whose students are often first-generation Latinx and English Language Learners, uses #language access as a starting point for understanding broader #accessibility. She aims to bridge ability and access by using translation as an analogy, emphasizing that disability does not imply incapacity. Students will use a disability simulator to experience accessibility barriers firsthand and apply these insights to their assignments, such as written, audio, and infographics. Accessibility will be embedded in the grading rubric throughout the semester in her SPAN 1512 course, “The Story and Stories of U.S. Latinos/as/x.” Congratulations to Sandra Watts! Stay tuned for more #FacultyFeatures as we celebrate our incredible educators!"
