"My job as a teacher is to be the antidote to misinformation." In this week’s Newsblast: Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow Lance Barasch and other educators share how they're teaching about and supporting their students during this election. Learn more and subscribe: https://lnkd.in/eshuDiEK

Educators, how are you helping your students navigate this election cycle and political moment? Teach Plus Senior Writing Fellow and Texas Senior Policy Fellow Lance Barasch shares how he approaches this: "Today’s teachers work in a new era, when access to information is instantaneous and ubiquitous. This means that when big things happen in the world, such as the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in 2021 or the Uvalde shooting in 2022, my students will know about it right away, and teachers like me need to continually be aware of (or straightforwardly address) the elephant in the room. Much of what my students consume on social media can be filled with conspiracies and falsehoods. My job as a teacher is to be the antidote to misinformation." https://lnkd.in/eHwbFiZh

Congratulations to Teach Plus Massachusetts and Teach Plus Mississippi on winning Eddies awards at the 2024 PIE Network convening! Teach Plus Massachusetts won Best Collaboration as part of the Massachusetts Literacy Coalition. The coalition’s work focused on providing school districts with targeted funding for high-quality, evidence-based curricula, effective teacher training, and ongoing student screening to increase reading proficiency among elementary students (approximately 290,000 students in state-funded preschool programs and public school students in grades K through 3). Teach Plus Mississippi won Game Changer Campaign of the Year for the development and passage of the Mississippi Student Funding Formula, which helps public school districts and public charter schools receive funding based on students’ individual needs in order to adequately serve their student populations, including those who are from low-income communities, English learners, in special education programs, and part of career-technical education programs so they can succeed in school, college, career, and life.
