However, these applications are limited by the available datasets. Modern humans originated in Africa and migrated out of Africa about 70,000 years ago creating a “bottleneck effect” that has left the majority of human genetic variants still in Africa’s 54 countries and 2,000+ ethnolinguistic groups. Multiple studies have shown that diverse populations often hold more genetic variants than caucasian populations, yet account for ~ 20% of available GWAS datasets with Africa accounting for ~ 1% while holding the most genetic variants. In contrast, caucasian datasets make up ~ 80% of GWAS datasets. 🛳 Syndicate Bio is building the world’s most diverse and richest human health datasets and applying AI/ML to usher in a new age of human discoveries and inclusive care globally. We partner with governments that give us access to large populations and datasets in their countries. We then build additional datasets like genomic and proteomics datasets that can be analyzed for insights and value. These datasets are generated in our laboratories in Africa. We also provide genomic profiling tests to patients and providers in Africa and consent them to become research participants. They need assistance from family or professional caregivers to perform basic hygiene tasks. This constant dependency causes embarrassment, mental and physical decline, and imposes a big burden on caregivers. Additionally, 1.7M nursing assistants get back injuries every year with the most common reason being patient handling. The annual cost of staff back injuries in U.S. healthcare is $20Bn annually. This problem is compounded by (1) the rapid growth in the elderly population and (2) the increasing shortage of caregivers. 🛳 ReviMo has created the first robotic lift and transfer device, Niko, that allows individuals with mobility challenges to safely get out of bed and take care of themselves independently. 💫Techstars Physical Health Fort Worth Accelerator Spotlight: Proton Health (Techstars 2024), founded by Haroon Ahmad and Dr. Niall Jawad. 💡550M people live with a long-term skin condition and it sucks. Despite billions in research, three fundamental questions still remain - we don’t know why breakouts happen, we don’t know when they’ll happen next and despite thousands of therapies, people don’t know which ones work best for them. Dermatologists are the supposed solution, but they aren’t scalable - they’re inaccessible and there’s expected to be a 13,000 shortage by 2030. Even then, they’re still stuck using trial and error which leads to a 60% treatment failure rate. 🛳 Haroon had severe eczema for 27 years. So every few days he had suffered with inflamed, dry and itchy skin on his face, arms and legs. Despite being a practicing physician, he was still unable to tackle these breakouts. So he and Niall teamed up to leverage data and AI to solve this problem for good. The result was that after using Proton Health, Haroon finally became flare-up free last year. Peeq is primed as the issues are starting to present themselves. Since 2000, dry eye disease in the United States has spiked form 3 million sufferers to 40 million sufferers.
