Can useful technology bring also joy ? Joy, AI and a bit of serendipity brought my team and I to TED AI in San Francisco. We had a blast and it’s been quite the journey, from the first edition on stage to the video today. I believe a humanoid robot with a story is more than a utilitarian machine. It invites us to feel, or even reawaken emotions. It encourages us to imagine new ways of working with new tools; tools that can support our daily lives with a touch of enchantment. After 20 years of passionate work creating humanoid robots, I’ve come to a conviction: they don’t have to be just useful.. They need to be joyful, and bring us joy. More than that, I think that humanoid robots is the most effective way to bring happiness at scale. And that matters, now more than ever. **** #SCIENCE #FOR #POLICY in #AI & #MUSIC: what do they have in common? *** Last October 2024 I had the chance to speak at TEDAI San Francisco, US, at the heart of Silicon Valley. My goal was to present in a simple and personal way what I see as our perspective for artificial intelligence in the EU and in particular at EU Science, Research and Innovation: interdisciplinary science for a human-centric, balanced approach. I used references from projects I have contributed to along my career at the European Commission #ECAT #HUMAINT & Music Technology Group. I am not sure if I achieved my goal, but in any case the experience was worthy!!! (1) I #LEARNT a lot, from input by JRC and EC team, friends, TED AI team, other speakers. THANKS to all: this talk is not a personal but a collective outcome! (2) I enjoyed it, it was so #FUN! From conception to rehearsal in the venue, a wonderful setup and very FAR from my “academic” confort zone. (3) I met wonderful #PEOPLE. I could listen to a diversity of views on AI, explain about the role of the JRC, the European Commisison’s scientific service, and get ideas and connections that are inspiring my work. Orchestrating the Enchanted Tools performance at TEDAI San Francisco was a true adventure — one that crossed continents, stretched hours of passionate work, and shared a positive vision of Robotics and AI. To the teams in France and the US - Enchanted Tools, SPooN AI, Leadership Moxie, TEDAI San Francisco : a WARM bravo and thank you ! Your talent, trust, and tenacity made us accomplish what could feel prematured at this stage of the development but Miroka did it, and for real. What Jérôme Monceaux brought to the stage wasn’t just a robot still in early stage— it was a story, fueled by passion, vision and boldness✨. A moment of enchantment in a world often driven by utility only. I believe it’s time we move beyond the uncanny valley — to shift from fear to curiosity, from cold tech to tools that (re)connect with our creativity, our smiles, our intrinsic human motivators. Humanoid robots don’t have to be unsettling. They can be joyful. They can be meaningful. They can be… « lively » in their own way. Miroka has continued to evolve over the past few months, both in its design and functional capabilities. Let’s keep building the future with intention — and with a little magic. I’ve been endlessly curious to understand for as long as I can remember. But what if some phenomena are so complex that we — as individuals or even as a species — simply can’t grasp them? And what if understanding them was critical to us? In this TED talk, I explore some of what we can change now to maximize the chances that AI can help us push beyond our cognitive limits.
