Field notes from TEF Principal Alyosha Verzhbinsky, FAIA who attended the Healthcare Design Conference + Expo in Indianapolis over the weekend: "An excellent conference, covering a variety of topics – from a mass timber hospital white paper and a keynote on how to be happy, to a look at Academic Medical Centers in 2045 through the lenses of research. It was also great to share the exhibit floor with fellow healthcare design professionals and showcase TEF's expertise in Vision Care design," remarks Alyosha. We craft places people love.
About us
Creating places people love. At TEF Design we believe that extraordinary results are achieved through authentic collaboration with our clients. Our work reflects the unique circumstances of each client and commission with an approach that focuses on listening, open communication, and follow through. Established in 1997, we are an architecture and interior design firm located in San Francisco. Our staff of over 30 is distinguished by the convergence of “large firm” experience delivered through the culture and care of a small practice. We combine these skills with a deep commitment to craftsmanship, value, and responsibility to create memorable places where people come together to share ideas and build community. While every project we design is an original expression, each shares a common framework of design principles. We seek modern, economic, and responsible solutions that are optimistic, open, and warm; that foster community, health, and well-being; and that are emotionally-satisfying to those who visit, work, and live in them.

Congratulations to the Presidio Trust on celebrating 30 years as a National Park! We at TEF Design are very proud to help support their unprecedented transformation from former Army Base to self sustaining National Park. https://lnkd.in/gWfPkzn9 TEF is currently completing work on the transformation of three former US Army structures near the Main Post into leasable commercial and educational spaces: 2 Lincoln, the original Civil War Era hospital; 102 Montgomery, one of the iconic red brick, former barracks buildings lining the Main Post; and 40 Moraga, a former warehouse shed. #tefdesign #presidiotrust

#BacktoSchool at the Town School for Boys Engineering Studio where hands-on tinkering and creative problem-solving is the focus. The conversion of two classrooms into a dynamic and adaptable space for kindergarten through 8th grade students prioritizes safety, flexibility, and innovation with height-adjustable and mobile work surfaces, sliding whiteboards, two Lego robotics tables that can be raised and lowered from the ceiling, and state-of-the-art technology and tools. Located in San Francisco, students will benefit from a space that not only supports their academic growth but also encourages their creativity and collaboration, preparing them for the challenges of the future. https://lnkd.in/g2aTuKC4 Photos: Mikiko Kikuyama #tefdesign #schooldesign #labdesign #townschoolforboys

The September Issue: Back to School | Check out our recent #newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gzH2zfs7 We’re celebrating back to school season at TEF! The new academic year always brings a sense of anticipation and fresh starts and we’re excited to share what’s new and notable on the education front. Our practice has been committed to the development of young people for more than two decades through the design and delivery of flexible educational facilities that support inquiry, exploration, discovery, and a wide range of pedagogical models. For us, this entails the stewardship of solutions that elevate health and wellness, equity, and belonging as the foundation of robust teaching and learning. From early childhood development centers to post graduate institutes, we’ve been hard at work to help students prepare for a rapidly changing world. Pictured here are TEF’s recent primary and secondary educational designs include (1) the Cow Hollow School at the Presidio and (2) the Engineering Lab at Town School for Boys in San Francisco. Our Kresge College Expansion at the University of California, Santa Cruz received Honor Awards from both AIA Chicago and AIA California. Located in a dense canopy of trees, the new design developed with Studio Gang and TEF Design tightly balances the environmental impact of the expansion while creating a unique and comfortable experience for the students. Atelier Ten developed a holistic approach to sustainability addressing energy, carbon, water, health and wellbeing. We studied the daylight conditions to identify overshadowing risks of the site, and made recommendations to bring more daylight into the building for areas that were underlit. We also studied the sequestration impact of the landscape and trees, the #embodiedcarbon of the building materials and the #operationalcarbon of the buildings. Congrats to the team! #buildingscience #architecture #highereducation https://lnkd.in/eM-GKG8b

e-architect reports on the construction progress of the new Undergraduate Academic Building at the University of California, Berkeley designed by LMN Architects in collaboration with TEF Design. Mark Reddington, Partner at LMN Architects, comments: “The Undergraduate Academic Building, located at the center of campus, connects a variety of campus experiences – bridging the academic core with student life activities. The new academic and social hub was designed through an expansive collaboration process with students, faculty, campus leadership, TEF Design, and a diverse team of contributors. The outcome of our engagement and the feedback is this state-of-the-art facility tailored to support modern teaching and learning needs, aiming to elevate student experiences within and beyond the classroom. Designed to be one of the most sustainable mass timber structures on campus, we are excited for the construction progress and look forward to experiencing how the building supports the community at UC Berkeley.” To read the article, visit e-architect: https://lnkd.in/gS4zqYUj

We’re thrilled to share that the Kresge College Expansion at the University of California, Santa Cruz is an AIA California 2024 Design Awards recipient (Honor Award) – congratulations to the entire project team! "This is a spectacular project. The buildings were surgically inserted to let nature prevail. A sensitive architectural response to the site, with buildings carefully nested into the redwood forest, and bridging between the buildings, that elevates students above the forest floor." - Design Awards Jury https://lnkd.in/gT-PGv4K Design Architect and Architect of Record: Studio Gang Associate Architect: TEF Design Builder: Swinerton Structural: Magnusson Klemencic Associates, MME Civil + Structural Engineering Civil: Sherwood Design Engineers Landscape: JONI L JANECKI AND ASSOCIATES INC., Office of Cheryl Barton MEP, Fire Protection: Introba Sustainability: Atelier Ten Lighting: HLB Lighting Design Acoustic: Salter Envelope: Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) Wayfinding / Graphics: Cheng + Snyder Quantity: Directional Logic Accessibility: Jensen Hughes Technology: TEECOM Theatre: The Shalleck Collaborative Planning & Visioning: Brightspot Photos: Jason O'Rear TEF Design team: Andrew Wolfram, AIA, Maryam Rostami, AIA, Laura Allen, AIA, Gretchen Korsmo, Paul Pasquariello, Ivana Pilipovic Patrirck Rakszawski, Benny Lin, Brayden Templeton, O.J. We're thrilled to share that the Kresge College Expansion at the University of California, Santa Cruz received an Honor Award from the AIA Chicago Designight 2024 – congratulations to the entire project team! https://lnkd.in/guiKknnW As Associate Architect to Studio Gang, TEF Design collaborated on the pre-design, site design, and planning work for the LEED Silver-targeted renewal and development of the college campus, renowned for its experimental, late 1960s postmodern take on an Italian village by Charles Moore and William Turnbull. TEF also led all phases of design and approvals for the transformation of existing student dormitories, with a focus on increasing unit density and accessibility, subsequently completing design criteria for this second phase of work when it pivoted to a design-build delivery model.
