Humans are a part of nature — so restoring our forests is about more than just planting trees. Rebuilding an ecosystem sustainably means addressing the needs of the human communities that coexist with the forest — such as shelter, food, and safety. In the Philippines, Terraformation is embarking on an ambitious new restoration project in partnership with CCCO2, a Philippine reforestation and conservation company founded in 2018. As the biodiverse forest is restored to this former colonial cattle ranch, agroforestry will enable the local Indigenous communities to grow native crops like cocoa, hemp, and millet. A few facts about this project: • 1,000 hectares, with 12,000 hectare expansion potential • 508,000 tonnes of CO2 sequestered over 40 years • Environmental co-benefits include improved water quality, reduced risk of wildfires, and enhanced erosion and flood control • Agroforestry areas will integrate crops of cocoa, hemp, and adlai (millet) • Equal employment opportunities, including for women in leadership positions We're excited to begin the restoration of this beautiful mountain region. Our hearts are with the communities affected by the Mountain Fire in Ventura County, CA. The safety of people and pets is heavy on our minds, and we share in the gratitude to the first responders working through enormous challenges to save lives and homes. As our changing climate fuels an increasing number of natural disasters, we 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 look ahead and take broad action to reduce risk. By working together, we can create a safer and more sustainable planet for all who share it. https://lnkd.in/g4XAKhC3

How can we work together toward our vision of a better world? Plant native forests faster: "More than a third of the world’s tree species are threatened with extinction, according to the first comprehensive assessment of trees by the world’s leading scientific authority on the status of species." The New York Times reports on new findings by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, which examined 80% of known tree species. Of these, nearly 40% were found to be at risk of extinction. Planting, conserving, and restoring forests with native species can preserve our planet's biodiversity for the generations that follow us. We can be good ancestors. Read more (gift link): https://lnkd.in/eBDFdsca

Terraformation is dedicated to helping solve climate change — and that's why we've made our new forest management app, Terraware, available to everyone. "With Terraware, [TF Head of Product Nicole] Wilke hopes sharing information about what works and what doesn’t will be easier — which is why the software is open-source and free to use for anyone who needs it. 'It's just a tool that we want to put in your hands,' Wilke said. 'And that's how we think that it can help in the fight against climate change.'" https://lnkd.in/eBbv2TR5

Verra's new Nature Framework, announced this week, is an exciting step forward for the protection of nature and biodiversity on Earth. The joy of being in nature is free for all who share this planet — but in our resource-hungry world, natural ecosystems are under increasing threat. Finance for conservation activities is critically needed but often challenging to secure. The Nature Framework, an asset methodology under the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) program, provides a way to calculate baselines and develop structures for companies to support conservation in measurable ways. At the same time, it centers the Indigenous Peoples and local communities whose work is critical in preserving global biodiversity. At Terraformation, we know biodiversity is essential to healthy forest ecosystems, and for maximizing their potential to store carbon. The first version of Verra's Nature Framework creates new possibilities to fund the work that cannot wait: the conservation and restoration projects critical to our climate future. What makes a forest? It’s not just trees, as single-species plantations prove. A real forest is part of a rich, biodiverse ecosystem that supports a myriad of life, strong enough to withstand drought and disaster, and built to last hundreds — even thousands — of years. As our climate changes and atmospheric CO2 increases, it’s up to us to restore our planet’s native forests. The Sembrando Futuro 2.0 reforestation project has partnered with #TeamTrees and the Arbor Day Foundation — and 1,667 young trees are now growing strong thanks to their support! The first Colombia project for #TeamTrees will plant 5,000 native saplings in the tropical Andes, one of the world's most biodiverse regions. #TeamTrees has planted nearly 25 million trees in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, thanks to donations from companies, organizations, and individuals all over the world. We're grateful for their generosity in helping Fundación Grupo Argos's Sembrando Futuro 2.0 project (and many others!) regreen our planet.
