We are so grateful to have been invited to the BlackECE symposium this year. Our take-away was a strong reminder that by sharing resources and filling in policy gaps, we can ensure California's Black children, their families, and our partners receive the culturally affirming care and fair compensation they deserve to thrive in our state. #EquityForAll #SupportBlackKids Here we are with our partners: (left to right) Dr. Carla Bryant (DIAL EE) Vickie Ramos-Harris (Catalyst California) Keisha Nzewi, Samantha Thompson, Tonia McMillan, Sheilah Brooks (Black ECE) Eva Rivera and Jamila Michael (TCP) Menaka Mahajan (CCRC), Courtney Armstrong (F5 Association), Esther Nguyen (F5LA)

Picture 350,000 children in your mind. At least that many have been disenrolled from Medi-Cal. Not because they no longer qualify, but because of “procedural issues” or administrative hurdles like -Being unable to find time to return paperwork, -1 out of 5 calls for renewal being disconnected before reaching an agent, or -Phone wait times up to an hour and a half. These are all findings from an audit we commissioned through WestGroup Research to find out what barriers low-income families are facing to maintain Medi-cal coverage for their children. (Read the full survey findings here: https://lnkd.in/ga7hRyTU) This is why we support SB1289 (Roth), which would mandate minimum standards for Medi-Cal call centers and require counties to report wait times. This bill could address these systemic barriers to health to ensure all California children have affordable and reliable physical and mental health care. Our president, Mayra E. Alvarez sums it up: "For many low-income families, for many immigrant families, the phone is going to be a critical source of connection to services, and so we need to make sure that those phone lines are working for families." Read more about SB1289 and what it can do for California families in this LA Times article by Jenny Gold and Emily Alpert Reyes: https://lnkd.in/gvhEDYei

We know that California families lose Medi-Cal coverage during their renewal period, even when they are still eligible to continue receiving benefits. Why? Long wait times and dropped calls create obstacles to renewal. That's why we co-sponsor SB 1289 (Roth), which would set expectations and requirements to ensure timely call center services. We also commissioned West Group Research to survey Medi-Cal centers in California to better understand what families are experiencing during their renewals. Join us tomorrow, August 7 @ 11am to discuss the findings and recommendations with policy experts from Western Center On Law & Poverty, Northeast Valley Health Corporation and San Diego County. Tens of thousands of California children will benefit from Biden’s new executive order, which provides a pathway to citizenship for their parents. This policy will enhance children’s financial security, mental health, and school performance, ensuring a brighter and more stable future. #ChildWelfare #ImmigrationReform "The opportunity that families are going to be able to stay together as they apply for permanent residency is a direct commitment to child well-being. It’s an acknowledgment that parents and caregivers are critical to children’s healthy development." - Mayra E Alvarez

We're thankful to Governor Gavin Newsom for standing strong on Prop. 35. To ensure health equity for our children, #CA must fund #MediCal #ContinuousCoverage. The current budget supports #MYCE, but the ballot question could cut this crucial funding & jeopardize kids' coverage. #KeepKidsCovered

California's state budget is final. For children's health, here are the key wins & disappointments for children's health: - Funding to implement multi-year continuous Medi-Cal eligibility for young children (effective January 1, 2026) - A rate increase for community health workers, promotores and representatives. - Preservation of funding for the expansion of Medi-Cal health care coverage to all income-eligible Californians, regardless of immigration status and including In-Home Supportive Services. - Maintenance of funding for health enrollment navigators at clinics. - $250 million for the Middle Mile Broadband Initiative for digital equity.
