  • “A journalist unsafe in Gaza is a journalist unsafe everywhere.” - Sharon Nadeem #Canada: In an emotionally charged gathering on February 16, 2023, Vancouver journalists, in partnership with Inspirit Foundation and CFWIJ, organized the solemn vigil #JournalistsForJournalists. The event honored the memory of journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to call for an end to the increasing violence against the media. Since October 7, 2023, at least 88 journalists have been killed, including 18 women, marking this period as the deadliest for journalists since 2015. The staggering death toll underscores the perilous conditions under which journalists operate on the frontlines. The #JournalistsForJournalists vigil not only served as a memorial for those who have paid the ultimate price for their commitment to uncovering the truth but also as a platform for demanding accountability. Participants and organizers emphasized that the figures represented not just statistics, but people dedicated to informing the public and holding power to account. CFWIJ and WPF demand the deliberate targeting of journalists ends. We must create an environment where journalists can carry out their essential work without fear for their lives. #israel #gaza #lebanon #killings #restinpower

  • #Canada: POLICE VS PRESS The recent charges against journalist Brandi Morin underscore a larger issue of press freedom in Canada. Despite the country's purported commitment to international press freedom standards, CFWIJ and our Women Press Freedom team documented numerous instances of police obstruction and harassment against journalists. Over the past five years, CFWIJ has recorded at least 17 instances of police intimidation and obstruction targeting women and non-binary journalists, painting a troubling picture of the challenges they face in pursuing their vital work. CFWIJ and WPF reiterates that Morin’s case is bogus, and that the police should not obstruct journalists from doing their job.    #journalismisnotacrime #pressfreedom #media #endpolicebrutality
