Just finished up an energizing and action-packed few days at the Aspen Security Forum. A highlight was kicking off the week with a women in national security dinner (shout out to fellow co-hosts Kristin White, Kaitlyn Garman, and Alexa Chopivsky, as well as to the amazing women who joined us). Then there was the chance to hear from so many business and government leaders on topics ranging from defense tech to AI to competitiveness to Ukraine, from panelists such as Kent Walker, Anne Neuberger, Bruce Andrews, Christine Wormuth, Alan Estevez, Anna Makanju, Doug Beck, Penny Pritzker, and Courtney Kube, among so many others. Very grateful for the chance to connect with new and old friends against the backdrop of too-pretty-to-be-real scenery. On June 23rd, we were delighted to host an evening reception in our Washington, DC office focused on “The Middle East and US: Opportunities and Investments”. Alongside the SelectUSA Investment Summit, we co-hosted the event with the U.S. Commercial Service, and welcomed over 200 attendees including delegations from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as well as a number of guests from Washington D.C. to include representatives from the Embassies of Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon, along with companies, think tanks, and nonprofits that work in this region. Partner and Chair of the firm’s US-Middle East Initiative Ehab Elsonbaty (PhD) and partner and chair of the Emerging Growth and Venture Capital practice Jeff Lehrer welcomed guests on behalf of DLA Piper, and were followed by an illustrious slate of speakers: Ambassador P. As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, DLA Piper DC was pleased to host our good friend General Jim Mattis from our strategic partner The Cohen Group for a wide-ranging discussion at an all-attorney luncheon yesterday. In a discussion led by our own Gov. Jim Blanchard, General Mattis addressed an array of global challenges and his own experiences as Secretary of Defense and in 43 years of distinguished U.S. Marine Corps service. We also welcomed our summer associates this week, and General Mattis gave them valuable advice as they begin their own careers.

On April 8, Senior Counselor General (Ret.) Mike Scaparrotti hosted Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti for a fireside chat at the annual TCG Navy League policy breakfast, kicking off the Sea Air Space exposition for the senior members of the Department of Defense, sea services, international delegations, and industry partners. We were honored to host the discussion with Admiral Franchetti, a gifted leader who is already shaping the Navy’s approach to the challenges it faces in these turbulent times. 

We are pleased to announce that General (Ret'd) Sir Tim Radford KCB DSO OBE will join The Cohen Group as a Senior Counselor on April 10 after 40 years in the British Army. General Radford last served as NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) from 2020 to 2023. "We are thrilled that General Tim Radford is joining The Cohen Group. He is a leader whose career of stellar service was marked by outstanding courage, judgment, valor, and character," said former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen, Chairman of The Cohen Group. During PDAC 2024 in Toronto, Canada, the largest mining convention in the world, Cohen Group Senior Counselor General Paul Kern (Ret.) participated in a public-private dialogue hosted by SAFE’s Center for Critical Minerals Strategy and the U.S. Department of State to discuss the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) and the Minerals Investment Network for Vital Energy Security and Transition (MINVEST) Partnership.
