Through compassion and action, together we can create a hunger free Eastern Massachusetts.

About us

The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. GBFB powers a distribution network of over 600 partner agencies in 190 cities and towns across Eastern Massachusetts, feeding more than 600,000 people and distributing over 104 million pounds of food annually. GBFB acquires 76% of our food through financial contributions from generous donors to procure high-nutrient quality food. With our purchasing power, we can confidently guarantee that for every dollar donated, 92 cents goes to hunger-relief efforts. We also benefit from the generosity of over 27,500 volunteers annually who help to sort and pack food products to be distributed to our partner agencies across Eastern MA. GBFB works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through our 600 partner agencies that include local food pantries, community meal programs, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers embedded in communities throughout 190 cities and towns of Eastern Massachusetts. GBFB’s partner agency locator provides an easy way for people in need to find help nearby. GBFB also distributes food directly to those in need through dedicated programs that serve particularly vulnerable groups, such as seniors and children. Since 2009, GBFB has operated out of a state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, the Yawkey Distribution Center, located in the Newmarket section of Boston. The Greater Boston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization.

  • GBFB COO Cheryl Schondek had the incredible opportunity to attend the Ahold/Delhaize USA Family Foundation event, which raised over $10M for food insecurity initiatives with the support of brands and vendors from across the food industry. This event highlights the Foundation’s mission to build healthy communities through grants to nonprofit organizations. With several hundred attendees, including clients, vendors, retail associates, and celebrity partners like Johnny Damon and Jesse Bongiovi, the atmosphere was truly inspiring. A special shoutout to Deborah Hill for leading this impactful event and to Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop and GBFB Board member, for his ongoing support. We also want to recognize other Ahold/Delhaize leaders in attendance: Greg Amoroso, Nicholas Bertram, JJ Feldman, Lisa Kinsey, Ira Kress, and Roger Wheeler. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success! Together, we have the power to end hunger here.

Read the results of our non-partisan candidate questionnaire here: https://lnkd.in/eE8wrGFv While GBFB is a non-partisan organization and does not endorse any party or candidate, we stand by our neighbors facing food insecurity and are ready to advocate for policies that end hunger here.

  • Maternal health disparities in Massachusetts are putting Black and Hispanic mothers at severe risk. The reality is stark: Black women face more than double the rate of severe maternal complications compared to white women, and food insecurity only deepens these inequities. Maternal health and food security are deeply intertwined, especially for mothers of color like Donnette, who turned to one of our partner agencies Catholic Charities of Boston for help when she needed it most. At GBFB, we stand by the need for comprehensive solutions that address both health equity and food insecurity. Together with Mass Brigham Hospital, we can ensure that all Massachusetts mothers and families have access to the resources they deserve. Let’s keep pushing for change.
