The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research will receive $4 million in funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to lead a study to improve the health conditions of adults with multiple chronic conditions. With one-third of adults in the U.S. having multiple chronic conditions, the study will focus on those who have documented care gaps and social needs related to food, transportation, housing, utilities, or financial insecurity. It’s established that social health impacts physical health. People living with multiple chronic health conditions often encounter barriers to care such as transportation challenges, housing instability and more. Researchers at Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) developed a predictive model to identify adults who may experience one or more social barriers to health. The model connects patients who may have these social risks with relevant community programs. “People with heart failure and diabetes who can’t afford healthy food or don’t have a home to keep food in, are going to have more problems managing their diabetes and heart disease,” said Richard Grant, MD, MPH, regional director of research and evaluation for complex needs at The Permanente Medical Group and senior research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. Four months after the painful loss of his son to cancer, Hector Moreno suffered a heart attack. He underwent triple bypass surgery, which was quickly followed by a tear in his aorta and a lengthy stay in the ICU. Paul LaPunzina, MD, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, and Brian Cain, MD, performed open chest surgery over two days to repair Hector’s aorta. As he recovered, Hector felt new inspiration and a source of strength from his care team. And to express his gratitude, he reunited with the team who saved his life, not once, but twice. “It felt awesome to see the people who cared for me,” he said. “What you guys did was above and beyond the call of duty, and I’m just thankful. Thank you is not enough for me." Learn more about Hector’s story: https://lnkd.in/gB7yZ4Dh #PermMedInAction #HeartHealth

Kaiser Permanente Division of Research’s Vaccine Study Center is committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives. Their team of researchers gauge the long-term performance of a variety of vaccines, ranging from proving a new shingles vaccine remains effective for more than four years, to making sure flu vaccines stay ahead of ever-mutating strains. These results are informed by millions of data points from Kaiser Permanente’s research bank, the Vaccine Safety Datalink, a data-sharing collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health care organizations nationwide. “Our ability to study real-world use of vaccines over time with large, diverse populations is a unique contribution to the field,” said Dr. Nicola Klein, director of the Vaccine Study Center. Kaiser Permanente Northern California is at the forefront of improving care for young women living with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 20 to 49, but these women are often underrepresented in clinical trials, meaning little is known about their treatment needs and outcomes. A new study from KP’s Brooke Vuong, MD, Ana Jacinto, MD, Sharon B. Chang, MD, FACS, Gillian Kuehner, MD, and Alison Savitz, MD, reviews current treatments and provides actions for clinicians to promote personalized, coordinated care. The study builds on the team’s work to inform and further enhance care across Kaiser Permanente, including understanding the effectiveness of post-mastectomy home recovery programs and breast conservation surgery. Their work is spurring national conversations, and Dr. Vuong was recently appointed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women. TPMG celebrates Dr. Vuong and the entire KP Northern California team for this important work that will improve health and lives for decades to come.
