About us
The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare's mission is simple, but compelling: to promote compassionate healthcare so that patients and their caregivers relate to one another in a way that provides hope to the patient, support to caregivers and sustenance to the healing process. The Schwartz Center a national nonprofit dedicated to strengthening relationships between patients and caregivers and promoting compassionate, patient-centered care. The Center reflects the vision of Ken Schwartz, a Boston healthcare attorney who died of lung cancer at age 40 and found that what mattered to him most as a patient were the simple acts of kindness from his caregivers, which he said made "the unbearable bearable." He founded the Schwartz Center in 1995 to ensure that all patients are treated with compassion. The Center is housed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Ken received his care.

We are grieving the loss of a longtime supporter and friend of the Schwartz Center, Ruth Kilduff, RN. Ruth was a longtime Board Member and Board Chair. Since 2005, we have been the beneficiary of Ruth’s generosity, energy and wisdom. She volunteered countless hours, shared valuable insights, and inspired many others to support our mission. Her mentorship nurtured the next generation of healthcare leaders, ensuring that her legacy will continue to shape healthcare for years to come. Ruth was instrumental in expanding the Schwartz Center’s reach and ensuring the organization’s longevity.

“Our membership expanded a lot during the pandemic because people wanted that kind of community,” said Beth Lown, MD, Chief Medical Officer at the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare. “They wanted that ability to share what they were experiencing with people who knew what it was like to be there taking care of patients and families, what it was like to be afraid for your own family going home.” Read more in this recent article from CHEST: https://lnkd.in/eyUAjiXv
