About us
The Village Method (TVM) is a grassroots, community-based organization founded by husband and wife team, Mark and Mahea Gaskins. At TVM, our mission is to strengthen communities by being a conduit of empowerment for youth and families of African-ancestry. We stand in the gaps developing systems of engagement that benefit our community. This includes gaps in education, civic representation, access to opportunities and other areas where advocacy is needed. We do this by promoting youth development, family engagement and community outreach. In 2014, TVM partnered with the Union City school district to pilot an After-school program for 36 scholars. Today, we support over 100 families (nearly 400 individuals). One primary goal is to develop a cohort-system of supports for youth and families from sixth grade TO and THROUGH college. In partnering with the school district to build an academic program for Black students, TVM staff and volunteers learned that success must be defined by the ability to build the capacity of students, parents/guardians, and schools. When we launched The Village Method in a community where less than 5% of the students in the schools were Black, we weren’t sure what to expect. But the turnout was incredible—standing room only! This powerful show of support reinforced our belief in the importance of creating spaces that are welcoming, safe, and culturally affirming. For the past 10 years, we have been dedicated to building such spaces, focusing on the needs and aspirations of Black youth. Why? Because when the canary in the coal mine is thriving, it signals that everyone is doing well. And when the canary struggles, it’s an early warning that we must address the challenges impacting us all. By tending to the needs of the canary, we tend to the needs of everyone in the community. This focus doesn’t mean we exclude anyone. On the contrary, we’ve created intergenerational, multicultural spaces that welcome all while centering the richness of African ancestral culture. These are spaces where everyone—regardless of background—can come together, learn from each other, and grow stronger as a community. When we uplift and honor African heritage, we build a foundation that benefits us all. The Village Method (TVM) is a strategic partner for school districts, designing sustainable, holistic educational solutions. Through programs like ScholarPrep Nation, ASHE, and First Teachers Collaborative, TVM offers end-to-end service from strategic planning to implementation, significantly reducing administrative burdens for our partners. This is a Win, Win, Win! The community, school and (most importantly) the children all WIN with our Community Builders Initiative. Let’s do it again!

One of the reasons why we exists is to bridge the gap between the home and the classroom. “My teachers don’t event pick up the phone to talk to parents…” one principal complained. If teachers aren’t trained and supported in family engagement and relationship building, the entire educational experience suffers. We can help with that.
