About us

The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including: Websites and Mobile Sites; Video; Advertising, Media & PR; Apps, dApps & Software; Social; Podcasts; Games; and AI, Metaverse, & Virtual. Established in 1996 during the Web's infancy, The Webbys is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS)—a 2000+ member judging body. The Academy is comprised of Executive Members—leading Web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities—and Associate Members who are former Webby Winners, Nominees and other Internet professionals. The Executive Academy is comprised of industry luminaries such as actress Gillian Anderson, musicians Grimes and Questlove, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, Instagram’s Head of Fashion Partnerships Eva Chen, Twitter Founder Biz Stone, Vice Media Co-Founder and CEO Shane Smith, Tumblr’s David Karp, Director of Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society Susan P. Crawford, Co-inventor of Google Cardboard, David Coz, Refinery29’s Executive Creative Director Piera Gelardi, and Alex Blumberg, CEO and cofounder of Gimlet Media. Members also include writers and editors from publications such as The New York Times, Wired, Details, Fast Company, Elle, The Los Angeles Times, Vibe, and WallPaper. The Webby Awards presents two honors in every category—The Webby Award and The Webby People’s Voice Award. Members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) select the Nominees for both awards in each category, as well as the Winners of The Webby Awards. In the spirit of the open Internet, The Webby People’s Voice is awarded by the voting public. Each year, The Webby People’s Voice Awards garners millions of votes from all over the world.

What is good design? What makes for an accessible design? Is a design truly good if it can't be used by as many people as possible? At its best, the Internet offers inclusive and equitable experiences for every type of consumer. Historically, however, accessible design has been seen as a barrier to innovation. As consumers demand more from the companies they support, brands and agencies are answering a call to implement ethical design practices. Join us for Crafted Future: The Future of Design & Accessibility to explore how leaders from top brands and companies have reimagined their practices, and embraced the creative constraints to build more ethical products.

A lot happened in 1996... The first flip phone came to market. The Yankees won their 23rd World Series. The historic Blizzard of 1996 hit NYC. AND... The Webby Awards were born to celebrate the birth of internet culture. Dubbed the 'Oscars of the Internet', these awards have been tracking the web's evolution since dial-up was still a thing. And while the world has changed dramatically since then, the Webbys have remained a constant, shaping internet culture for nearly three decades. From honoring quirky websites to celebrating TikTok sensations, The Webbys have evolved with the web itself. With over 100 categories now, they're basically cataloging internet culture in real-time. This past year, NYC creators shone bright: 🏆 Macy Gilliam (Morning Brew) won Best Educational Social 🏆 "Borrowed and Banned" podcast took Best Writing 🏆 "Can't Afford Therapy" claimed Best Indie Pod But it's more than just awards. The Webbys are tackling big issues: 👉 Creator longevity 👉 Creator pay disparities 👉 Creator's role in impacting voter engagement The Webby Awards aren't just celebrating the creator economy — they're shaping its future. In the latest Creator Economy NYC newsletter, we spoke with The Webbys president, Claire Graves, and explored how the awards are championing internet culture and spotlighting rising creators like Macy Gilliam. I think you'll enjoy this one, and I believe we'll be seeing the Webbys much more engrained with the creator economy over the next few years. Read more with link in comments! 🤔 What impact do you think awards like the Webbys have on the creator economy? ---- s/o Emmy O. for her contributions to this piece.

I had so much fun chatting to the team Creator Economy NYC about the impact of creators on the Internet, what's next for the Webbys in this field and how we are planning to get more involved in the New York City Creator Economy.
