An investigation from AJP-supported Mississippi Today revealed that more than $7 million in Mississippi taxpayer funds have been directed to a country club neighborhood and golf course where one of the state's most influential lawmakers lives. The funds were used to "make $400,000 in improvements to a Northeast Jackson cul-de-sac where he owns one of 14 homes," among other projects. Read more:

We are mobilizing a movement to support the local press our democracy deserves.
About us
We founded the American Journalism Project based on three interlocking beliefs: 1. Democracy and journalism are interdependent. 2. Local journalism is a public good that market forces won’t adequately supply. 3. This market failure is a problem that we the people—not our government, and not our commerce—must solve. From these three beliefs AJP derives its purpose: to help catalyze a new generation of public service media that is sustained by, governed by, and looks like the public it serves.

They want it from someone who lives in their community, who understands the dynamics in their community," she said. Watch the conversation here:

A new investigation by AJP-supported Verite News New Orleans, in partnership with ProPublica, reveals the impact of Louisiana’s new law requiring 17-year-olds to be prosecuted as adults. While the law was intended to address violent crime, the analysis shows that 69% of 17-year-olds arrested in major parishes since the law's enactment were charged with non-violent offenses like trespassing and theft. Read more:
A law was meant to target teen violence. Instead, 17-year-olds are being charged as adults for lesser offenses.

We are excited to announce Ethar El-Katatney as Documented’s new Editor-in-Chief! Her skills and experience as a digital newsroom manager and strategist, and her passion, align so well with this position and our team. Most recently, Ethar served as News Product Strategy Lead for the Americas at Bloomberg. Previously, she was the Young Audiences Editor at The Wall Street Journal and the executive producer overseeing the AJ+ newsroom, the digital video arm of Al-Jazeera she helped pilot, launch and lead. In addition, Ethar has served as a dedicated member of Documented’s board for the past two years, and is deeply familiar with the organization’s mission and our commitment to letting immigrant communities lead on what is most important for us to cover. We look forward to having her join us starting Oct. 15!
