TSA was created to ensure the freedom of movement for people and commerce.

About us

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. As a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, we are charged with the mission to protect the nation’s transportation systems and ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. Our highly trained, professional workforce engages its partners and the American people to outmatch a dynamic threat. We employ more than 60,000 people around the world to ensure the safety of more than 2 million passengers every day – over 750 million a year – as they travel by plane, train, automobile or ferry. TSA practices an intelligence-driven, risk-based approach to security, comprised of multiple security methods and utilizing cutting-edge technology.

  • Let’s give a standing ap-paws to Rhea, the amazing K9 from O'Hare International Airport! After 7 years of top-notch service, she’s retiring to enjoy cozy naps and belly rubs. We’ll miss her fur-midable presence, but we couldn’t be happier for her.   As we celebrate Rhea, don’t forget to vote in the 2024 TSA Cutest K9 Competition starting 8/20. • This summer, we’ve had some pretty incredible travel volumes at airports across the country, where it seems like every weekend, we're seeing more travelers than ever before. This week, Administrator Pekoske spent time with our teams at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and later at Portland International Airport (PDX) thanking them for their hard work, especially with a brand-new checkpoint opening at PDX. "Engaging with our workforce and turning their suggestions into actions is my favorite part of this job. Thank you, #TeamTSA for all you do," - Administrator Pekoske via his X account.

  • Team TSA attended #DEFCON32 last week. With over 30,000 people at #DEFCON for hacking and cybersecurity, we were able to connect with so many different people. We had a great time engaging with everybody who stopped by our booth. Attendees were able to try out TSA's Open Architecture X-ray Simulation. Each person got to practice using the X-ray simulator buttons before being given images to screen, similar to those that our officers see each and every day. Of the 250 people who were able to try out our simulators, only 4 people were able to achieve a perfect screening score. This opened up a lot of great conversation around the hard work TSA officers do daily to protect the traveling public. In addition to our booth, Harlan Geer, our Executive Director for Strategy, Policy Coordination, & Innovation participated in an interactive tabletop exercise, where the crowd was able to walk through a security incident and discuss possible outcomes based on a cyber threat scenario at the airport, and then hear how the security experts on the panel would handle the situation. In the end, it was aliens that took over the airport... which led to some fantastic follow-up "what if" questions. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our events!

  • This week, we're all about celebrating! 🎉 Yesterday, we celebrated the retirement of one of our beloved K9s, and today we're celebrating #TeamTSA from Denver International Airport - City & County of Denver Dept of Aviation. They were recently recognized by the City of Denver with the prestigious Denver Airport Safety Stakeholder Award. The award recognizes TSA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our most valuable asset: our employees. Special recognition goes to Safety and Occupational Health Specialist (SOHS) Sulynn “Susie” Shepherd, who oversees the safety program for TSA Colorado. Her leadership, dedication, and hard work have been instrumental in achieving this award. Susie’s commitment to safety and her proactive approach to hazard prevention have set a standard of excellence that inspires us all. Full story: https://lnkd.in/e86pGFeu
