🌍 Why We Need Climate Justice NOW 🌍 In Tanzania, climate change isn’t just a distant threat; it’s a daily reality for our vulnerable coastal communities. Rising sea levels, intense droughts, temperature rise, and widespread coral bleaching are taking a severe toll—damaging homes, threatening livelihoods, and forcing families into hunger and poverty. For those living along our coastlines, these effects aren’t just environmental—they’re deeply economic, social, and personal. As we count down to #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, COP29 Azerbaijan our passionate Ocean and Climate Activists from the 4th cohort of the Ocean Bootcamp 2024 have a powerful message: We need climate justice, and we need it now. 📢 They are calling on global leaders to recognize and act on the disproportionate impact climate change has on those least responsible for it. 📢 Big news: ClimateWorks Foundation Invests $2M in Youth-Led Climate Solutions and Resilient Network! 🌍 ClimateWorks Foundation has unveiled a $2 million commitment to empower youth climate leaders and youth-led climate initiatives through a new engagement cohort. UMI Fund is excited to be part of this cohort, and we look forward to collaborating and driving impactful change alongside inspiring youth climate leaders! It’s no secret that today's youth will bear the brunt of the climate crisis. Predictions suggest children will experience roughly three times as many climate disasters as their grandparents. However, the youth #ClimateJustice space remains significantly underfunded, accounting for less than 1% of climate mitigation funding. When we strengthen youth climate movements, we also strengthen our global capacity for an equitable and thriving future for all. Partners in the cohort include partners include Black Girl Environmentalist, Oxford Net Zero, The Global Youth Coalition, Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford, Youth4Nature, Youth Climate Justice Fund, Youth on Root, UN Climate Change, COP29 Azerbaijan, COP28 UAE, Climate Vanguard and Latin America Youth Climate Scholarship. The reality of climate breakdown is painfully clear. Millions of children are suffering. The burning of fossil fuels drives the climate crisis, harming children now and stealing their futures. World leaders committed to “transitioning away from fossil fuels” in the Pact for the Future agreed at the United Nations Summit of the Future in New York. This result was the result of tenacious people power. 💪 Now leaders need to turn those words into real action. Parents want a fair, fast and funded transition to renewable energy, so that we can pass on a healthy planet to our children. 🌍 Ahead of the Summit over 150 + notable parents called on world leaders to end the world's dangerous dependence on fossil fuels. “Real systems change is going to require that we show how local, community-based solutions are the answer: the most effective, most efficient, the least expensive, the most sustainable and resilient.” WATCH: Movement Building for Zero-Waste shares insights from the #community leaders, representing 8 different countries, who attended the Composting for our Future workshop led by groundWork in Durban, South Africa. GroundWork is one of the member organizations of the UMI Fund Lifecycle/Zero-Waste network, a UMI-incubated collective of groups working on environmentally just food waste and climate solutions. It is crucial for global efforts to unite and support local environmental justice efforts to end waste pollution and implement regenerative zero-waste solutions. We believe in change that puts people at the center, protects livelihoods, prioritizes a just and fair transition, and mainstreams #zerowaste models that tackle food waste and methane emissions. Collective, co-designed community efforts are the heart of our work.
