New York Post recently published an article about women who are skipping college to pursue careers in nontraditional fields. The ULA Network sits down with Andy Johnson Fund Administrator from the Teamster Center Services Fund to learn more about the services provided to Teamster members and their families. Teamster Center Services (TCS) is a Taft-Hartley Trust Fund that provides advice, referral and case management services to the participants of its member welfare funds. The Teamster Center Services Fund was founded in 1962 by Teamsters Joint Council #16 as a way to address rising healthcare costs. Originally called “The Teamster Center at Montefiore,” it opened as a specialized medical unit at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York. Today, TCS is an trust that serves over 29,000 Teamster families in the New York Metropolitan area, including the five boroughs of New York City; Long Island; Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam Counties; and Northern and Central New Jersey. Now in its 30th year, the Health & Benefits Expo which will be held on September 19th at the Sheraton New York Times Square is the largest multi-employer and public benefits conference held in the New York Metropolitan area. The Expo provides a unique opportunity for the Trustees and Administrators of benefit plans to obtain up-to-date information on critical issues affecting their organizations. The ULA is proud to repost this inspiring program from Mike Schloff CEO at Maplewoodshop Please watch this video on the power of human collaboration in the form of youth exploring careers in construction. This July, 90 youth aged 18-24 worked towards earning a certificate in construction, 3 college credits, OSHA 30 certification as well as important math and soft skills. As part of the NJBUILD CARPENTRY WORKSHOP for Women & Minorities in Construction program at the NEWARK WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD INC, these Summer Youth Employment Participants (SYEP) spent two weeks learning construction, and two more weeks learning OSHA regulations. Maplewoodshop worked with the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters to hire union carpenters as teachers, the Newark Public Schools to hire Barringer Arts High School construction students as teaching assistants, Big Picture Learning and Harbor Freight Fellows to provide stipends to the teaching assistants. Maplewoodshop trained the carpenters and teaching assistants to work with novices, equipped 4 empty conference rooms, and supplied all the materials needed to create a tool tote, a bookcase, a step stool and other projects that demonstrated tool skills. We are proud to have enabled this large-scale pop-up workforce development program and are grateful to the mayor’s office and dignitaries who attended the graduation including Deputy Mayor Rahaman Muhammad , City Council President LaMonica R. McIver, Council Member at Large Min. Louise Scott-Rountree, North Ward Council Member Anibal Ramos, and State Senator Teresa Ruiz. We are excited to help youth across Newark discover the opportunities around them in the months to come.
