Project 2025, combined with Trump’s track record of dismantling climate safeguards and sidelining scientific voices, points to a strategy that could prioritize fossil fuels, weaken federal climate protections, and erode the role of science in decision-making. Understanding this context is key to preparing for the potential challenges ahead. Despite the grim outlook, this is a call to action, not a cause for defeat. States, municipalities, and advocates are already strengthening defenses and pushing for multi-layered climate solutions. Who’s attending #COP29 really matters - and tracking the attempted influence of fossil fuel companies on the debate is hugely important for organisations like the Union of Concerned Scientists. Live from Baku, we spoke to Climate Accountability Campaign Director Kathy Mulvey about monitoring the fossil fuel industry and how to build capacity among climate science experts:

Heading into COP29, we need to anticipate and prepare to fight attempts by the fossil fuel lobby to reverse or delay the agreement to transition away from oil, gas, and coal—or to divert resources to approaches that aren’t likely to play a material role in meeting 2030 targets and don’t fully reduce the environmental injustices and public health harms of fossil fuels that impose such a heavy burden on places like the Niger Delta.

The use of intimidation tactics follows a long-standing playbook aimed at suppressing critics and sidestepping accountability. Exposing and countering these tactics is essential to maintaining a transparent, science-based approach in the fight against corporate influence.

As this exhausting election season wraps up, it’s easy to feel frustrated, especially if results take time. However, “understanding the process and preparing for a long haul is a critical step to making sure we stay engaged, no matter who wins in the end.” #ElectionScience
